20 Ways To Take Advantage Of Summer With Your Hometown Friends

As I head home for the summer, I want to take advantage of these next three and a half months. When people say, “after graduation you will hardly ever see the people you graduate again," it is very true. I haven’t talked to many people I was close with in high school since last August. So, this summer I want to spend as much time with my high school friend group that I still talk to, as possible as this will probably be the last summer we get this opportunity.

1. Go to the lake

Who doesn’t love going to the lake and riding around on the water with their friend group?

2. Go to the beach

It’s not summer time unless you go to the beach with your closest pals.

3. Go skydiving

This is something that’s on a lot of people's list, why not knock it off this summer?

4. Make some money

All college students know the struggle of living on a small budget through the school year to take advantage of not having school work and work a little.

5. Workout

Yes, college makes you gain a little weight, everyone knows it. So, use your extra time to make yourself look good and feel even better with your best friend by your side.

6. Float down the river

Grab a cooler, a large pool float and just relax as the water pushes you down the river.

7. Go to a concert

Whether it’s a music festival, a big concert in a city near your or just a local band playing live music. Slow down and take in the live music.

8. Pool days

Easiest way to hang out with your friends and enjoy summertime.

9. Have bonfires

Make some s’mores, hang out under the stars, and enjoy the sweet summer nights.

10. Read a book

I know, it’s summertime... but find a book or a series you enjoy and dive in. You can read with your friends as your laying out getting a tan. Kill two birds with one stone!

11. Go cliff jumping

This might not be feasible for all people but where I’m from there are places me and my friends can do this.

12. Learn to surf

Got to go to the beach to accomplish this one. Refer to number two.

13. Go to a drive-in movie

There are a lot of great movies coming out this summer. So, get your friends together, get a pickup truck and some blankets and you can watch a movie on a big screen under the stars.

14. Watch a sunset

These occur everyday so take advantage of it!

15. Visit a waterfall

Hike down a trail, take some pictures, and if you’re brave enough to bear the cold water, jump in the water.

16. Do a good deed

Pay for someone behind you in line of a drive-thru, donate some canned food, go to the animal shelter. Get your friends together and this could be a fun thing to do as well as helping your hometown community.

17. Go a week without social media

This allows you to go on some adventures with your friends and have more free time without being connected to your cellphone all day.

18. Go to a baseball game

MLB or College, whatever league that is around you. Go have some fun enjoying America’s pastime.

19. Spend time with your family

Yes, this is probably one of the last summer with your friends from high school, but don’t forget about your family.

20. Make every second count

This statement speaks for itself!

Take advantage of this summer, it’s one of the last summers everyone in your friend group from high school will be in your hometown together. This is one of the last summers before we all get internships, jobs at school, do research or whatever ties us to the future. Enjoy it!

Summer: a time (usually) free from school work and a time to relax with your friends and family. Maybe you go on a vacation or maybe you work all summer, but the time off really does help. When you're in college you become super close with so many people it's hard to think that you won't see many of them for three months. But, then you get that text saying, "Hey, clear your schedule next weekend, I'm coming up" and you begin to flip out. Here are the emotions you go through as your best friend makes her trip to your house.

Winter break is over, we're all back at our respective colleges, and the first week of classes is underway. This is a little bit how that week tends to go.

The professor starts to go over something more than the syllabus

You get homework assigned on the first day of class

There are multiple group projects on the syllabus

You learn attendance is mandatory and will be taken every class

Professor starts chatting about their personal life and what inspired them to teach this class

Participation is mandatory and you have to play "icebreaker games"

Everybody is going out because its 'syllabus week' but you're laying in bed watching Grey's Anatomy

Looking outside anytime past 8 PM every night of this week

Nobody actually has any idea what's happening this entire week

Syllabus week is over and you realize you actually have to try now...or not

Now it's time to get back into the REAL swing of things. Second semester is really here and we all have to deal with it.

panera bread

Whether you specialized in ringing people up or preparing the food, if you worked at Panera Bread it holds a special place in your heart. Here are some signs that you worked at Panera in high school.

1. You own so many pairs of khaki pants you don’t even know what to do with them

Definitely the worst part about working at Panera was the uniform and having someone cute come in. Please don’t look at me in my hat.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.
