This is a response to Being Single Is Not Synonymous With Being Unhappy.

I'm never afraid to admit that I've never been in a relationship for almost 26 years that I've been living. I know people are surprised that I've been single but I'm not fazed by their reactions to my single status. Looking back at my younger years, I'm so glad I didn't end up in relationships with the wrong people and knew my worth it. Everything happens for a reason and me being single happened for a reason.

I think it dug a little deeper each time I never responded to his apologies, pleas, happy birthdays, merry Christmases, happy new years, "I hope the new boyfriend is treating you right" and the several essay-length handwritten letters. I was not coming back. Despite what may have occurred, that was not my choice and I know my own worth enough to look up with a high chin.

We live in a culture that thinks that after a relationship ends, no matter how toxic and draining that relationship was, we need to be devastated. We clearly never loved the person if we don't experience heartbreak. However, I believe that isn't true. Sure, we are heartbroken by the love that didn't make it, but most of the time, leaving a toxic relationship is our saving grace.

I am so sick of watching strong, wonderful, beautiful young women allow a toxic relationship to hold them down. There is SO much more to life than feeling stuck with a partner that makes you feel like crap. You can truly thrive after leaving this relationship and you can accomplish everything you've always wanted and more.
