10 of the Saddest Meals I've Had Since Coming to College
Because sometimes, dining hall food just won't cut it.
Eating in college can be a real struggle, especially when you've already spent all your money on tuition and textbooks that should honestly be free, but aren't for some reason (cough cough, college is a corporation enforced by capitalistic standards).
Don't get me wrong –– the dining hall food at USC, as far as most colleges go is, pretty above average. But that doesn't mean that sometimes, I'm just not in the mood for a chicken burrito bowl for the fifth day in a row.
Desperate times call for desperate measures. Here are the ten saddest meals I've had since coming to college: all sort of pathetic, yet amazing in their own way.
A bag of pumpkin spice marshmallows
Kate Ly Johnston
For the autumn-lover in all of us.
This classic combination
Kate Ly Johnston
These two items can honestly get me through an entire weekend.
Some peanuts and pretzels from a Thai restaurant
Kate Ly Johnston
That feel when you're too broke to afford anything on the entrée menu.
A key lime pie-flavored waffle
Kate Ly Johnston
Okay, this one was actually pretty bomb.
A milkshake-flavored Pop Tart
Kate Ly Johnston
Breakfast of champions, amiright?
Chai Soylent
Kate Ly Johnston
Bought for the meme, and rest assured, I'll never be putting that into my body again –– it tasted a bit like old cereal milk.
Charcoal iced coffee
Kate Ly Johnston
Whoever said iced coffee isn't a meal obviously hasn't ever gone through three finals in one day (not to mention the speculated health benefits of activated charcoal)!
USC-themed Jello
Kate Ly Johnston
If your school is extra enough to have themed jello sets, you gotta use them at least once (in a completely PG-13 way, of course).
This failure of a rainbow heart cake
Kate Ly Johnston
My friend made this cake using blue cake mix and food coloring and, needless to say, it didn't turn out quite as aesthetic as he expected.
The rainbow chicken burger
Kate Ly Johnston
I passed a sign for rainbow burgers on a random street in LA and I knew immediately that I had to try it. When I put it on my Snapchat story, six different people messaged me: "Is that a Pretty Patty?"
The blue bun didn't taste any different from a regular bun, and I wasn't sure whether to be relieved or disappointed.
But hey, I'll take a rainbow burger over some peanuts and pretzels from a Thai restaurant any day!
