Tackling Christmas Consumerism
Remnant Culture

Once you reach a certain age, Christmas is not the same anymore. I think after you get a taste of the real world you realize that Christmas is more about the season and everything that goes into it, not just Christmas itself and less about the presents under the tree. Being in college also changes your views on the holiday season because truthfully I could unwrap a new bottle of shampoo on Christmas morning and treat it like a brand new iPhone. After I reached about 14 I started to feel guilty for receiving so many gifts on Christmas and since I have not treated the holiday the same. A lot of people like receiving gifts and new things because it excites them, as new things will fill a void for a certain amount of time. However, you will recognize a new sign of maturity and sense of understanding when you would rather be giving the gifts- not receiving.

Yes I know, we are all selfish to a certain extent, myself included. I just think consumerism and the need to constantly have the "new" or "better" is ruining our institutions, especially family. Tangible items are just that- tangible. Other than material items you can pick up at the store, there are plenty of gifts you can give those who love you. Whether it is spending quality time with a relative you do not see often or helping your mom out in the kitchen, these thoughtful gifts go a long way and never expire. When the "newest" toy is not the newest anymore it is the memories and experiences you have that you will remember the most.

This holiday season I hope you open your eyes and hearts to those struggling to even make it to Christmas. I realize seeing a homeless person while on your way to pick out your grandma's gift might not be the ideal shopping trip, but it is the cold hard reality of life. Many are struggling to stay warm this cold December, forget about buying gifts for their family members. When in the giving spirit, keep in mind those begging for change or even those suffering overseas in Aleppo and donate.

Christmas is meant to be a fun and warm holiday, and I do not mean to bring people down. I just want everyone to open their eyes at how selfish we can be and make a change. Christmas is more than items that will keep us satisfied until next year, and so are we. Christmas is about finding it in your heart to give to those around us. So somewhere between baking cookies and watching elf, I hope you take a minute to appreciate everything around you and remember those who are less fortunate.

No Matter How Challenging School Gets, You Have To Put Your Health First — A Degree Won't Mean Anything If You're Dead

Some of the best advice I've ever received was from my social studies teacher in sophomore year of high school. He stated, "If you don't know it at midnight, you're not going to know it for the 8 a.m. exam, so get some sleep."

It's such a simple piece of advice, but it holds so much accuracy and it's something that the majority of college students need to hear and listen to. "All-nighters" are a commonality on college campuses in order to cram in studying for an exam that is typically the next day.

girl with a hat

This is for the girls who have dealt with an emotionally, mentally, physically or verbally abusive father.

The ones who have grown up with a false lens of what love is and how relationships should be. The ones who have cried themselves to sleep wondering why he hurts you and your family so much. This is for all the girls who fall in love with broken boys that carry baggage bigger than their own, thinking it's their job to heal them because you watched your mother do the same.

Blair Waldorf Quote
"DESTINY IS FOR LOSERS. IT'S JUST A STUPID EXCUSE TO WAIT FOR THINGS TO HAPPEN INSTEAD OF MAKING THEM HAPPEN." - BLAIR WALDORF.

The world stopped in 2012 when our beloved show "Gossip Girl" ended. For six straight years, we would all tune in every Monday at 9:00 p.m. to see Upper Eastside royalty in the form of a Burberry headband clad Blair Waldorf. Blair was the big sister that we all loved to hate. How could we ever forget the epic showdowns between her and her frenemy Serena Van Der Woodsen? Or the time she banished Georgina Sparks to a Christian summer camp? How about that time when she and her girls took down Bart Bass? Blair is life. She's taught us how to dress, how to be ambitious, and most importantly, how to throw the perfect shade.

too tired to care

We've all been there. From move-in day to the first finals week in college, your first term is an adventure from start to finish. In honor of college decisions coming out recently, I want to recap some of the most common experiences college freshmen experience.

1. The awkward hellos on move-in day.

You're moving your stuff onto your floor, and you will encounter people you don't know yet in the hallway. They live on your floor, so you'll awkwardly smile and maybe introduce yourself. As you walk away, you will wonder if they will ever speak to you again, but don't worry, there's a good chance that you will make some great friends on your floor!
