Syracuse Pride And Love

If you have to love one thing about Upstate, Syracuse isn't so bad.

It's winding down to the end of March Madness this year and, believe it or not, the Syracuse Orange made an appearance in the Final Four. Everyone, except us true Syracuse natives, pushed Syracuse aside from the beginning saying that they shouldn't even be in the tournament. If this year's March Madness has taught me anything, it's that having Syracuse hometown pride is something to be proud of.

Being a part of a small city with a big college is quite the experience. Everyone walks around constantly sporting orange and blue. Syracuse fans are die-hards and I would not want it any other way. Being at college makes me miss my hometown scene and all fellow hometown friends can agree that as much as we may love college, there's always going to be something that keeps our hearts at home. Whether it be the smell of Dinosaur BBQ from down the street, Armory Square on a Friday night or breakfast at Bruegger's with the family, the community keeps us coming back.

For a town that many complain has nothing fun to do, is so much fun. All natives can agree you have not lived until you have made at least one Dome appearance. The concerts are great there, but you absolutely have to experience a Syracuse orange basketball or football game in the Dome. It is an experience like no other and makes it easy to call home. The Dome is where the heart is.

Along with the Dome, the Syracuse campus is always a fun place to hang out. Marshall Street is the hot spot for a "free last period" high schooler looking to grab something to eat when getting an early dismissal. There's nothing quite like hanging on SU campus when you're in high school and just trying to blend in.

Collectively, Syracuse is the heart of a bigger community. It brings people together from all towns and because of that, so many people are friends have friends in other towns. It is not a surprise to see almost every person you know on a Friday night downtown at Mully's or maybe spending a Saturday afternoon checking out the Sound Garden. I love that Syracuse has brought me closer to so many people and although I never went to school there, I still carry my SU pride with me everywhere I go...Go 'Cuse!

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.
