This week we were #blessed with another track from the duo, Sylvan Esso.
Sylvan Esso is arguably the coolest couple out there. Comprised of Amelia Meath’s vocals and Nick Sanborn’s production, they create clean, catchy tracks that are the opposite of mainstream and are unmatchable.
With all the hype around bigger named artist and intensely produced shows, this small named, Durham couple could easily fall off the radar at bigger festivals. Luckily, I decide to camp out at the front of the tent where Sylvan Esso would be performing when I saw them last spring, and it was one of the best decisions I have made.
The show was comprised of Amelia’s incredible vocals, which she mashes up with wonderful dance moves whilst on stage. Her husband, Nick, the second half of the duo, creates the beats and bass for these bangin’ tunes. The best way I can describe their sound is ‘acoustically produced.’ Half of the group stands solely on production but they somehow manage to keep the vibe of an acoustic track, which can only be attested to Amelia’s incredible voice. When they performed Hey Mami, she rocked just her vocals to begin- with zero back up. And it was perfect. She has the voice of an alternative angel.
This coming weekend, these North Carolina natives will be taking the stage at the Hopscotch Music Festival in Raleigh. Along with fellow North Carolinians, Kooley High, the festival will surely be a hit. Anyone around should check it out.
Pro tip: You can get tickets to just specific days, along with certain shows (such as just going to see Erykah Badu and Gary Clark or Sylvan Esso, Vince Staples and Tuskha, etc.)
Tickets here and schedule here.
Some notable tracks by them include H.S.K.T. and Could I Be , though the entirety of their self titled album is perfect and you should just listen to it all here or here.
Like their sound? They’re even better live. Check out their Tiny Desk Recording (at NPR) here.
