Syllabus week, or otherwise known as Sylly week.
When you read those words, your mind definitely does not go to a classroom or school work, it goes to a bunch of college kids going out every night for a week straight.
And yes, I am definitely one of those kids....
But I also think that syllabus week is actually important in terms of classes.
You are literally given everything you need to succeed in a course in the first week. This may sound a little redundant, but you get your syllabus then. You have a piece of paper (or a computer screen) spelling out everything you need. Any questions during the semester can probably be answered just by looking at that one thing. You have the grading scale, the course policies, the attendance policies, maybe even the entire course schedule. Professors usually get mad when you email them asking questions about simple things... just look at your syllabus.
That's another thing about syllabus week. You get to know how your professor will be throughout the semester. I think that you get to know your professors the most when they are going over the syllabus with you, because they're telling you what's most important to them. You find out their personality, their values, things about their personal life (if they do an intro on themselves). You will also probably be able to figure out if you need to drop the course during the first few days, that is, if you're paying attention.
Most people just sit down and tune everything out, because, hey, it's sylly week! I don't need to pay attention, we aren't doing anything important!
True, you are most likely playing the name game and listening to the professor read the syllabus and talk about him or herself. But if you're asleep during it, you most likely won't know what to do later on when a problem arises in the course.
All that being said, I am definitely not telling you not to go out. It's the best time to go out! What I am saying, is that if and when you go out, make sure you're able to make it to class and stay awake the next day. Because if you can do it during syllabus week, you'll make a habit of it. So... If you are one of those people who goes out and goes to class the next morning and sleeps during it, that'll probably follow you through the whole semester. The same goes for vice versa, if you make it a habit of being able to focus in class when you went out the night before, you'll do great.
Moral of the story: make it to class during sylly week, stay awake, pay attention, and you're golden.
