Everyone knows the stereotypes of Greek life. We have all seen the movies, yet few actually know what it means to be a member of the Greek community.
Being Greek means you have a family and support group to help you through anything life throws at you. It gives you somewhere to go when you have nowhere else to. It gives you friends that will be with you for the rest of your life. And yes, it also helps give you a social life because without my sorority, I would probably just naall the time.
,Greek life adds some pretty amazing attributes to any college campus which is why it continues to grow on campuses nationally as well as internationally. However, many schools seem like they are trying to get their Greek rows shut down. This was hinted at in WSU last semester when the moratorium was placed on Greek row after a pretty crazy Halloweek (when thousands of non-WSU students come to Pullman as well).
The moratorium may not have been the best way to react, in my opinion. When the moratorium was first put up, a lot of us were angry, upset, and maybe a little confused. When I was first informed about it and told the rules I had a fear of seeing or hanging out with any of my sisters for fear it would be seen as a 'social gathering' and my sorority would get in trouble. We eventually learned more about the rules and conditions of it and my fear of hanging out with my friends died down.
I see where the moratorium came from, but I also know that WSU is one, if not the, safest campus in the Pac 12 and in Washington. Yes, incidents, accidents, and bad things happen because nowhere is 100% safe, but WSU is doing a pretty dang good when it comes to safety. And although many blame Greek row for the incidents that do happen, shutting down Greek row wouldn’t stop them from happening. They would just happen somewhere else. Greeks aren't the problem - yes, I'm sure not 100% of Greeks are friendly and nice all the time but you can say the same for anyone. Being Greek isn't the problem.
I love WSU and I love my fellow Greeks, and I know that cougs help cougs which is why we are one of the safest campuses in the Pac 12. I know WSU likes to party and have fun, and I know I do as well, but we aren’t dangerous. We help each other and look after one another. Our school motto might as well be ‘cougs helps cougs’ because we all do and always will – Greek or not.
All eyes will be on Greek row, so I ask everyone to keep this in mind this upcoming sylly week and make sure to stay safe and be a true coug.
