10 Reasons Why Syllabus Week Is The Only Week That Matters Every Semester

How syllabus week lives up to the hype.

Syllabus week is the oddest yet most fun part of the semester that stretches for a little over a week. Everyone comes back for spring semester refreshed after a long break at home or on vacation, and are more than eager to get back to the daily grind and see their friends.

The thing is, syllabus week is usually hyped up, but for good reason. It's the one week of the semester that anything goes, and you actually have time to sneak a nap in between classes. Below are ten events that sum up syllabus week and also why you should appreciate every waking minute you get to enjoy it in college:

1. Seeing your friends

The excitement that builds up over the break to see your friends back at school is almost unbearable. There is no happier moment than running to see your friends moments after just setting your belongings down and catching up over the month you missed together (even though you probably texted constantly).

2. Power naps

Like I said before, use every spare moment of syllabus week to catch up on sleep before the daunting semester arrives and leaves you sleep-deprived for an awfully long four months. Basically what I'm saying is, sleep now to make up for the lack of sleep to come!

3. No homework

This often varies between classes, but during syllabus week, the most stressful homework I am tasked with is ordering the right edition of my accounting textbook. Take advantage of these days off to plan out your semester and make time for yourself.

4. Packed gym, but not For long...

The one downfall to syllabus week is the fake gym crowd that floods the gym for a good week and a half and leaves you stranded without an elliptical. Fear not though because in a week's time, most of their New Year's resolutions will wear off and the gym will clear out so you can have a treadmill without try hard neighbors.

5. Enough time to eat

This is another great perk to syllabus week. You will actually be able to fit in a lunch or coffee date to catch up with friends before school takes over your life and the only thing you eat for six hours is a questionable Naked Juice (seriously, do you see how much sugar is in those bottles?).

6. Enough time to cook

Maybe you like to cook instead of eating out because honestly, sometimes it's so nice to be able to take half an hour to do an activity besides school work or going to the gym. The reward, of course, is even better when it's a steaming bowl of pasta or stuffed omelet.

7. Making your own schedule

Syllabus week is also the time for rearranging your schedule. That's right, time to collect those override forms and head to the registrar's office to get into the classes you actually NEED and WANT to be in. There's no better feeling than making a schedule that suits your credits and gives you some time to sleep in or squeeze in time for lunch.

8. Moving in early with no one on campus

Another great way to start off syllabus week is to come an extra day early, before the rush of everyone else to get yourself situated and mentally prepare for the semester ahead. It also gives you plenty of time to food shop and buy a notebook or two (although this proved difficult for me this semester). I recommend buying a notebook at home or on Amazon since every store around my college was sold out and I desperately purchased one in the bookstore for $15. Talk about draining my bank account as soon as I step foot on campus.

9. Enough time to get ready for the semester ahead

If you aren't a fan of power naps (but honestly, who isn't?), use your spare time this week to jot down important dates and deadlines in a planner. Trust me, you'll appreciate knowing you have three final projects due the same day ahead of time. Getting organized and being ahead of the game is not only a smart decision, but it also sets the tone for you to have a successful semester.

10. A week to have fun

Don't forget that without homework and serious commitments, this is the perfect week to let loose and go out with friends before all the work really kicks in. Take advantage of late starts and shortened classes because it's highly unlikely you will experience it later on in the semester.

Sorority

I remember my freshman year oh so well. I remember feeling terrified the night before orientation. The one thing that I dreaded the most was not the new people, the new environment, or even the academic pressure. I was dreading having to talk to sorority girls about Recruitment. I remember cutting off and avoiding any Rho Gamma/Panhellenic Officer that came my way during First Week. I looked at them like they had asked me to cut my arm off whenever they asked me if I wanted to rush. To be honest, I did not even know what rush was, but I knew that I did NOT want to be a part of it. To me, it was dumb. It was a waste of money. It was a waste of my time.

And guess what? I did not rush my freshman year. I spent the first half of my freshman year isolating myself from everyone on campus. I spent all of my time in the library, and then (since I was a commuter) went back home once my work was finished.

Tiana would no doubt be disappointed in the food our cafeteria has to offer.

And hopefully she would cook for everyone in her dorm.

She definitley would not take any 8:00 am classes because she would be up late baking and cleaning up the communal kitchen that are available in every dorm.
