The start to a new semester means the start to syllabus week. With a whole slew of new classes, combined with new students, and new parties, syllabus week is always an interesting, yet imperative time of the year.
1. Those morning coffee runs become a necessity again
It's that time of the year again when the Starbucks lines make Black Friday lines seem minuscule. Everyone is rushing out the door, half asleep, hoping to beat the morning rush. Unfortunately, many of us will not have time to make it to Starbucks early enough to be prompt for our first class, and will be struggling to stay awake.
2. Contemplating going out during syllabus week
Is it really syllabus week if you're not getting sylly? Yes, though it is one of the few weeks of your life when it's acceptable to go out every day of the week, sometimes it's not worth it. Your friends may think that your professor's just going to hand you the syllabus and excuse you, but then reality hits and you know that you're going to be learning from week one to week sixteen.
3. Watching new students wander around aimlessly
Seeing new students trying to get to their classes on the first day back is always amusing, but maybe try to sympathize every now and then, and remember that was you at one point (it might even still be you).
4. When your professor really does start teaching on the first day
Looks of shock and terror will flood the room while all the students look at each other wondering if the professor is serious or not. When your professor opens the dry erase maker, and the familiar squeaking noise disturbs the silence for the first time in weeks everyone knows they're in for a long semester.
5. Already struggling to get out of bed by day two
The thrill of the first day of classes seems to keep us going through at least most of the day solely from adrenaline and anxiety, but once we remind ourselves that this semester is just like every other one, getting out of bed is almost impossible. This is especially prevalent during the cold winter months when there's nothing more appealing than our blankets and pillows.
6. Beating yourself up for taking early classes AGAIN
Every semester you tell yourself you will never take a class before noon again, but then registration hits as does the harsh reality of knowing that that is never going to be a possibility. You tell yourself this semester will be different, but you know it never really is. Old habits never die, including staying up all night thinking you can wake up for your class in the morning and never being able to.
7. The sweet smell of old rented textbooks (maybe not so sweet)
The textbook list seems to increase every semester. As we get farther along towards mastery, it seems that there is only more for us to know. We get more and more broke as we get closer and closer to graduation.
8. Learning who to avoid sitting next to
Very quickly it will become obvious who to sit next to, and who to avoid. Don't sit near the people who will be distracting, like the person who asks the dumb questions, the person doodling in the margins (even though that's pretty much everyone), or the person watching Youtube videos in the corner. Remember you're here to learn, as boring as the class might be.
9. Preparing yourself for the workload ahead
Let's face it, we're never going to get away with not opening our books at all during the semester. The harsh realities of studying are going to hit soon, and during syllabus week, you should be able to gauge how much time and effort this class is really going to take. If studying doesn't seem like it's in the cards for you, remember textbooks make a great yet extremely expensive door stop.
10. Trying your best to hide your sarcasm about your FANTASTIC first day of classes from your parents
How many times can your parents really ask how your day was before they realize that the answer is always going to be, "It was fine. I'm fine. Everything is fine."? School isn't always going to be a great time, but the few times it is, make sure your parents know your tuition money is getting some use.
11. After a long week being able to put down your bag and kick your legs up
Let's face it, syllabus week is never as easy as we anticipate. Friday is going to come before you know it so hang tight, and get ready to learn. It's finally the weekend, and you have two days of you-time waiting for you!
Syllabus week is only the start of a roller coaster of a semester. Good luck everyone!
