5 Things To Do During Sylly Week To Set The Semester Off To A Good Start

In This Article:

It's sylly week and you're feeling lost already. Here are a few ideas on how to start the new semester on the right foot.

Get A Planner And Actually Use It

Using a planner is the best way to stay organized throughout the semester. The perfect time to buy one and start using it you ask? Syllabus week! Not having many many assignments during the first week is when you should go through the syllabus (hence the name of the week), and write down all of the important dates to remember.

Buy your Textbooks

Though this sounds obvious, most people don't buy their books until after school starts. This is very smart because some professors are just trying to suck all of the money out of you and you never actually use the book! Go to class during syllabus week and get a vibe for if you really need the book. Also, do your research on websites such as rate my professor to see if previous students used the book.

Take Note of your Professor's Office Hours

Many students don't use their professor's office hours and I have no idea why honestly. Your professor is there to help you! And they are an expert in the class you're taking! Knowing when the office hours are will help in the future when you need to go get help, you won't have to waste time looking up when and where you need to go.

See What Homework You Can Start Early

Getting ahead before getting overwhelmed is the best to hopefully NOT get overwhelmed later in the semester. Usually, there is some assignment that you can start way before to it's due. Also, spending this extra time on the first assignment will start your grade off on the right foot, with hopefully a 100%!

Make Sure To Have Fun

Let yourself have fun during this slower time in the semester also! If you don't, you'll more than likely get burnt out really, really fast. This week is the best because you are back with your best friends after not seeing them in what feels like forever. Go crazy at least a couple times during this week!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
