Everyone knows what "Syllabus Week" is, and if you don't, Urban Dictionary defines it as “the first week of class, when syllabi are passed out…a big waste of time.” Basically it’s a joke week where nothing really is learned, there is no homework, quizzes or exams, and no one has to go to class or try.
Now let me tell you why that’s total bullshit. Every year the Internet buzzes with memes of this week and its supposed easiness. I have already had an exam, two quizzes, six homework assignme-…and I just realized that I already forgot to do an assignment. Excuse me while I bury myself in a hole somewhere. I’m not even kidding, its day five and I already let something slip through the cracks. Ugh.
There may be a semblance of this fairytale week for freshmen first semester as they are so new and don’t have many obligations or responsibilities yet. So to the class of 2020, I hope you enjoy(ed) this week and that it was the easiest of your academic life…because it’s probably not going to happen again.
Today is the end of my fifth first week of a semester in college and if my self-distain over already missing an assignment doesn’t explain to you how it went, then let me just tell you I am exhausted. Let’s take out the other factors in this equation like organizational responsibilities, jobs, internships/research, etc., although these things take on a lot of our time and mental capacity, just based off my academics I would still say that I am incredibly tired and stressed out. As the lucky people whose majors might not be that demanding and have enjoyed their week of dreamlike proportions – the rest of us are still studying, trying to finish our homework, and crawling to the mini-finish line that is the weekend.
To everyone who can’t even remember, or never even knew how it felt to go through a week of classes without having at least one migraine, panic attack or mental breakdown, I am with you. Syllabus Week is not a thing, and if you don’t understand that then you probably just won’t until you get thrown face first into a concrete wall (what this and every week is like for the rest of us).
