Switching My Major Until I Found What I Love

Finding my passion through other passions...

Switching My Major Until I Found What I Love

When I first came into college, I did not expect to be a journalism major. While I always had an interest in journalism, I came to WVU as a pre-med route. I wanted to be a surgeon, or at least I thought I did.

My first major change came my first semester of college, freshman year. I came in as a Pre-Athletic Training major, but at the time I was also on the women's rowing team. Therefore, I was unable to be an athlete and a trainer at the same time.

So, I changed my major to Exercise Physiology.

A semester into Ex. Phys., I realized I did not want to go to med school anymore. It just wasn't at the peak of my interest anymore. Still having journalism in the back of my mind, I didn't switch to that. I decided I'll try the medical route one more time, and went into Psychology.

While I did love all my psych classes, I just knew in the back of my mind I wanted to be a journalist. So, one day, I walked into my advisor's office and told him I wanted to change. While he had been my advisor since the beginning, because I had no clue what I wanted to do with my life, he could tell this was that last change.

He was so excited to see how passionate I was this time. It just felt right to me.. and I'm glad I did it.

Since you now know my back story, and that I didn't intend on being a journalism major, I can honestly say I am so glad I struggled to finally find what I love doing.

The media has such bad lighting right now with all the chaos happening, but that is part of the reason I love it. I love getting out there and being able to hear everyone's opinions. I love seeing people fight for the things they believe in. More importantly, I love reporting on the truth.

TRUTH... that is a scary word to most people, but for a journalist, we thrive for that word. We thrive for the thrill of letting the world know what is going on.

I have never been more happy with my career choice than I am right now. My classes do keep me busy, but I'm glad that they are more hands on work.

Being a journalism major involves classrooms set up like it is your real job and I absolutely love that. While most students are spending their time in the library studying all hours of the night, I get to be out running around, talking to people and finding interesting stories to cover.

The best part about my major, it is never the same. The news is constantly changing and something is constantly happening, that means I get a whole new experience every single day. It is always something different.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
