The "Major" Switch: Just Do It

Going into college, so many of us are stressed out about picking a major. No one knows what they want to do when they are 17 or 18 years old, and that major decision will never go away throughout the entire college experience. Most of us second guess ourselves, have doubts of getting a job, worry about future salaries and sometimes we just honestly say:

"This career path and major are not for me."

This statement and realization scare people. The fear of not having a plan can really freak you out. I know this because I was there once. During my freshman year, I was a Finance/Marketing double major and lived in a Living Learning Community (LLC) with other business students. I thought my future was set and that I had made a solid choice by surrounding myself with like-minded people. However, one day in November, I was laying in bed and realized that business wasn't for me. After mulling it over for less than 24 hours, I went to an advisor in the education building and switched my major right then and there.

It takes guts to change your plans on a dime like I did, but we are all capable of making choices. College is all about making decisions and becoming involved with people and organizations that further who you are. Take advantage of this time to really zero in on what you want your future to look like, and when that "major realization" comes into your head, don't shut it down.

You have to go for it and let yourself be truly happy with your career path. You have to "Just Do It." You have to be bold, confident and ready to encounter changes throughout your life, and this is one serious choice you face early on in life. Also, remember that another serious choice was figuring out where to attend college in the first place. You didn't choose to go to your respective school randomly or for meaningless reasons, you chose to attend in order to make your life better than it is now. So, keep that in mind, because making your life better involves choices and not standing still.

What is the worst that can happen anyways? Say you switch your major and you hate it and want to go back to your original one or explore more options, what is so bad about that? You can change your mind a million times if you really wanted to, because the possibilities are endless, and your path will never cease.

In the end, let's not forget that switching your major is scary, but the alternative is much scarier. You won't regret jumping into a new world that makes every day exciting and worthwhile. You will only regret staying in your field. Down the road, you will be sitting in your office, car or bed wondering what life would have been like if you took that leap of faith into a new world of opportunity. Don't let your future become those clouded with those types of thoughts, you have to "Just Do It."

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
