A Guide to Spicing Up Your Style

In This Article:

If you're like me, you tend to start off every season by saying that you're finally going to step out of your comfort zone and change up your wardrobe. No more repeating the same outfit of leggings with a sweater in autumn, no more using the same plaid shirt as an attempt to accessorize your all-black outfit. You want to branch out, change it up, wear clothes that make you feel more confident.

However, this motivation usually lasts about twenty minutes once you wake up late and throw on the first pair of old jeans you can find because you don't have the time to search through your closet for something cuter. Even if you manage to dress nicer for a few days, you're usually back to your old self by the end of the week.

Adding a little change to your style doesn't have to mean completely replacing your wardrobe. It could be something simple that brings the entire outfit to a new level, or an extra pop of color that elevates your mood when you see yourself in the mirror. The way we dress is directly correlated to the way we feel about ourselves, so differentiating your outfits could have a significant impact on your self-esteem.

Hats

Whether it's a baseball cap or a beanie, we usually associate wearing a hat with having a "bad hair day." However, including a hat in your outfit could potentially improve your overall look. If you select headgear supports a certain sports team or brand, you'll inevitably receive compliments by fellow supporters.

Bandanas or Headbands

Those of you who aren't the biggest fan of hats may want to consider this option. Although bandanas were once strongly associated with biker gangs and rebellion, that era is over. Bandanas are a perfect way to accessorize a groutfit, since they come in so many different colors and styles. Or, you could always turn to the classic headband, whether it's something plain or something brighter, like a flower crown.

Jewelry

Jewelry brings so many potential options to the table. There are many ways to include jewelry in your style that reflect your own personality, from dangly earrings to a pendant necklace. Even if you want to start with small, like a simple ring, it can still complete a look.

Nail Polish

If you don't want to introduce a new item of clothing or accessory to your life, nail polish can be a method of bringing a pop of color while still remaining subtle. You can choose to go crazy with intricate designs, have an accent nail, or maybe stick with the classic French-tip. And don't think this is an option exclusively for girls, all identities should be able to enjoy the wonders of glittery nails!

Hair Styles

There are a ton of different things you can do with your hair that can completely change your appearance. You might be bold and decide to chop off a couple inches or maybe even dye it all a fresh, new color. There are choices out there that won't burden your wallet, too: straighten it one day, braid it the next, try one of those "DIY Messy Bun" tutorials on Youtube that are always confusing no matter how many times you watch it. Practice makes perfect, though!

Make-Up Routine

I don't know much about make-up, but I know there are a plethora of possibilities when it comes to different types of looks one can create through it: keep it natural, include a smoky-eye, use a bold lip. Instead of repeating the same morning routine, try introducing something new once in a while when it comes to your cosmetic palate. Experiment with what makes you comfortable and confident.

We're over halfway through the year, but that doesn't mean you are out of time to improve yourself. Just a simple change in style can drastically impact your self-perception and mood overall, so there's no reason not to try. Go out there and rock your new look!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
