Surviving The Winter: Salve Edition

Listen up, Seahawks—this is how to get through snow-ins.

Winters in New England can be long and unforgiving. Add a college workload, perhaps a job, family, friends… It’s pretty difficult to manage. Living on Aquidneck Island is a huge treat during the warmer months, but come winter time, it can be a bit of a hassle. But have no fear! With these tips, surviving winters at Salve will be an easy feat.

1. Stock up.

This isn't limited to food. Anything and everything goes. Once a nor'easter hits, life in Newport takes a serious halt. The shuttle system more than likely won’t operate and the RIPTA will be more than likely delayed. Stocking up on food, toiletries and other necessities will help you avoid having to brave the harsh winter gusts and avoid the dangerous slippery (and rather narrow) Newport roads.

2. Bundle up.

This goes without saying. Sometimes the heating systems in our lovely dorms can (and will) fail. There's a price to living in super nice cottages. The windows in our lovely homes can sometimes bust, too, and draw in drafts (this happened to me during my freshman year in Miley). Meanwhile, you wait for help to come from facilities, bundle up and try to wear layers. Certain buildings on campus are saunas compared to others. I'd suggest getting heat packs if you live far from academic buildings and need to trek it through the snow. Your fingers, toes and any other place you choose to stick them in will thank you.

3. Get familiar with the RIPTA.

On days when wind-chill is a problem, the RIPTA will be a friend to those without cars. iPhone users can also download the "Transit PVD" app. This app will tell you when the next RIPTA bus or trolley will pass by your stop. It's very easy to use. Though I am not familiar if it's available for Android users, the RIPTA site is always a quick search away on your smartphone.

4. Try eating at Wakehurst between classes over Miley.

This mostly applies to upperclassmen and freshman that live in Hunt/Reefe. It's a lot closer, you can have it to-go, and it's basically at the center of campus. The couches are super comfy, and be sure to make use of the game rooms and various lounges. If you want to go home, it's probably a 3- or 5-minute walk to your dorm. The library is also right next door, and all academic buildings are a lot closer versus Miley. Keep in mind the different times the meal plan begins, and snack accordingly.

5. Have fun!

I remember getting snowed in at Miley my freshman year and I loved it! I had a lot of down time and fun with my friends. Have snowball fights, binge watch Netflix, build blanket forts and have a ball!

Now that Halloween is over, it's time to focus on the Holiday Season. Don't get me wrong, I think Thanksgiving is great and can't wait for it, but nothing gives me greater joy than watching Freeform's 25 Days of Christmas, lighting peppermint scented candles, decking the halls, and baking gingerbread cookies. So while we approach the greatest time of the year, let's watch the 15 best Christmas movies of all time.

6 Signs You Are An English Major

There are various stereotypes about college students, most of which revolve around the concept of your major. Unfortunately, we often let stereotypes precede our own judgments, and we take what information is immediately available to us rather than forming our own opinions after considerable reflection. If I got a dollar for every time my friends have made a joke about my major I could pay my tuition. One stereotype on campus is the sensitive, overly critical and rigid English major. Here are six telltale signs you are one of them.

27 Things 'The Office' Has Taught Us

"The Office" is a mockumentary based on everyday office life featuring love triangles, silly pranks and everything in between. It can get pretty crazy for just an average day at the office.

When you were little, your parents probably told you television makes your brain rot so you wouldn't watch it for twelve straight hours. However, I feel we can learn some pretty valuable stuff from television shows. "The Office," while a comedy, has some pretty teachable moments thrown in there. You may not know how to react in a situation where a co-worker does something crazy (like put your office supplies in jello) but thanks to "The Office," now you'll have an idea how to behave ifsomething like that should happen.

Here are just a few of the things that religious Office watchers can expect to learn.

Being pre-med is quite a journey. It’s not easy juggling school work, extracurricular activities, volunteering, shadowing, research, and MCAT prep all at the same time. Ever heard of “pain is temporary, but GPA is forever?” Pre-meds don’t just embody that motto; we live and breathe it. Here are 10 symptoms you’re down with the pre-med student syndrome.
