Surviving The Next Four Years

A few thoughts on our new President-Elect.

This past election cycle was particularly difficult for me as a moderate.

One would call me a conservative democrat, or even a liberal independent. There are Economic policies I agree with the Republican Party on, and Social/Human Rights policies I agree with the Democratic party on. However, I can understand and respect your opinions if you have valid reasons for holding them. But one thing I CANNOT abide by is hatred, fear, and discrimination.

What I consistently hear across the board is that people are AFRAID. I didn't always agree with Barack Obama, but I was never afraid of him. I was never afraid for my friends and loved ones. When we have a President, who, regardless of political affiliation, inspires hate groups, rouses anger, and divides people by race, sexuality, and/or gender, there is something deeply wrong with our political system.

I will continue to respect your opinions whether you are pro-Trump or not, as I would expect anyone else to do the same for me. I too believe we need to fix our immigration policy and create new and better jobs - but not at the cost of basic human rights.

It is with a heavy heart that I do not know where I stand in President Elect Donald Trump's United States of America, as many of us do not know. I am a woman. I am a member of the LGBTQ community. I am disabled. I am also, however, white. I am also thin. I am also middle class.

I recognize the privileges and disadvantages I was assigned that neither I, nor anyone else, had control over. I believe we should all take a look at who we are and where we come from. We should pay attention to where our friends, family, and neighbors come from and the struggles they face on a daily basis. Over the next four years, I plan to use the privileges I was afforded to advocate for those who were not given them. Just as I hope those who are in a more privileged position than I, will do the same for me. It's a dangerous, cruel world out there. But it is also a kind, generous, caring world.

Protect, love, and respect one another as we have no idea what to expect these next four years.

Bob's Burgers
Adult Swim

Bob's Burgers is arguably one of the best and most well-written shows on tv today. That, and it's just plain hilarious. From Louise's crazy antics to Tina's deadpan self-confidence, whether they are planning ways to take over school or craft better burgers, the Belchers know how to have fun. They may not be anywhere close to organized or put together, but they do offer up some wise words once and awhile.

We're in college, none of us actually have anything together. In fact, not having anything together is one of our biggest stressors. However, there's a few little things that we do ever so often that actually make us feel like we have our lives together.

1. Making yourself dinner

And no this does not include ramen or Annie's Mac & Cheese. Making a decent meal for yourself is one of the most adult things you can do living on campus. And the food is much better than it would be at the dining hall.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.
