Surviving The Remaining Weeks of School

1. Don’t Skip Classes

Skipping too many classes can lead to disaster. Skipping classes at the end of the semester is a call for failure. Professors may go over vital material for the test or give out extra credit that will help you substantially. If you do need to miss a class for health reasons, be sure to contact the professor and get notes from a friend.

2. Do Your Work!

If you haven’t been doing your work all semester, this might be news for you, but doing your work is one of the most important things for passing a class. If you happen to be one of the unfortunate fellows who hadn’t been doing their work, you might want to speak with your professor and see what you can do about it. Otherwise, keep up your work ethic because falling behind now is definitely not ideal.

3. Sleep

Any college student knows that sleeping becomes a favorite pastime. Try to get a good night’s rest, especially when you have a busy day coming. If you happen to have insomnia or generally have trouble sleeping, try to be productive with your time.

4. Eat Well

Eating well is extremely important for a college student. The truth is, we can’t survive on cereal, chips, and coffee. Try to eat a balanced diet; this will help you stay active and more productive.

5. Don't Isolate Yourself

Yes, your work is extremely important and needs to come first. But you definitely need to take a break every once in a while. Spend time with friends, even if it’s just for a little study break. Or, if they won’t distract you, study with friends!

6. Be Aware Of The Syllabus

Being aware of all your syllabi is extremely important throughout the semester. These syllabi will tell you exactly when your tests will be and possibly what will be on them.

7. Take Advantage Of Extra Credit

Extra credit is a blessing! If your professor offers ANY extra credit, at least try to participate. Even if it’s just a few points, it’s better than nothing.

8. Consider Campus Resources

Nyack offers many resources that can help substantially during this time of year. For essays, The Writing Center is of great assistance. Nyack also offers tutors and counselors if you need someone to talk to during this stressful time.

9. Remain Positive and Keep Your Eye On The Prize

We’re in the homestretch! There are only two more weeks before you have a break to go home and see family and friends. Think about this when you have your 8 a.m. exam.

10. Pray

God knows how much a college student can stress! You have to prepare yourself, but you can also ask God for help in all things. As 1 Peter 5:7 says, “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”

11. Celebrate Afterward

The best way to end a stressful event is to celebrate getting through it! Spend time with friends and have a mini party or get together to celebrate getting through all your tests.

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.
