Tips For Surviving Exam Week & The Aftermath

Honestly, just tips to surviving school in general.

This morning I was talking to my mom about how confident I am about my final exams that are happening this week and next. I did the math calculating "If I get a 60, my average will be..." "If I get an 80...my average will be..." and so on. Basically, I'm lucky enough that even if I fail both of my exams, I will still have at least a B in all of my classes. Let me make note; I still want/wanted to get the best score possible. I wasn't careless on my exams even with the information that there was no way I could even remotely come close to failing the classes.

So why is it that I just completed my English exam - literally 37 minutes ago as of the time I am typing this - and had a complete panic attack after submitting it? I went straight back to my room, turned the light off and just laid on my bed staring at the ceiling. After about doing this for 5 minutes, I knew I needed to do something. I didn't want to get stuck in a rut due to some exam. Side note; grades do not determine your intelligence or worth. I got off my bed and immediately began to do things I know would lift my mood. Here are some things that may help you get out of that "I totally just bombed my exam. I hate college. Maybe I should just be a fry-cook - Call me SpongeBob" mood.

1. Give Yourself 5 Minutes

To survive finals week and waiting for your scores, you basically have to be a superhero. So give yourself 5 minutes to just lay there. Take a deep breath. Let out a few huffs and puffs. Rant to yourself in your mind. Get all of the anxiety out in those 5 minutes. Don't keep it held in because that will just do you no good whatsoever.

2. Turn On Some Lights

This may seem dumb or simple but this was one of the first things I did when I decided to get out of my "exam-rut." I personally plugged in all of the Christmas lights and the light up Christmas puppy I have in my room that resembles my puppy back at home to brink light and joyful colors into my room.

3. Turn On a Happy Show

One of my favorite shows is Criminal Minds and another is Grey's Anatomy. While these shows both have some comedic factor, the overall tone is dramatic. A show where someone is bound to die due to some medical problem and a show where some psychopathic killer is doing some psychopathic form of killing. Don't turn on one of these shows. They are not the most uplifting. Instead, I turned on New Girl. A show that literally makes me laugh out loud at least five times an episode.

4. Eat

Do not forget to eat during exam week. This is so important. Your brain needs food. You need the energy. This is also the time I'll say; eat whatever you want. Comfort food is key. Treat yourself.

5. Take a Chill Pill

Don't actually take anything bad for you. Obviously. I was just trying to think of something punny for the subject. But, I do recommend taking vitamins and Tylenol the day before an exam. This may seem like an odd one but as someone who can speak from an experience that happened just today, getting a headache whilst in the middle of taking an exam is very frustrating. Taking a Tylenol the morning of an exam is just a nice precaution.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
