Here at Southern Miss everyone is preparing for the beginning of the fall semester. The marching band is in band camp, students are moving into their dorm rooms, and the sororities are beginning rush. This time of year is a very exciting time for students, but it is also extremely stressful. Beginning your collegiate career is easily the most terrifying time in a young adult's life thus far. Here are a few tips for those of you entering this crazy world that is college.

1. Don't freak out about picking a major.

Picking the right major is a hard, important decision, so don't freak out if you don't get it right the first time. It's okay to change your major. This is the time to figure out that you want to spend the rest of your life doing, so if you need to change your major, change it. Make sure you're spending all this time and money to get a degree in something you are passionate about to ensure that you will have a career that you love!

2. Don't skip class!

Stop rolling your eyes, and just trust me. The only result of skipping class is a damaged GPA, and no one wants to deal with that.

3. Befriend your instructors.

This will benefit you more than you know! It really does help to communicate with your teachers. Ask them for help when you need help. Office hours are your best friend! Don't be afraid of your teachers, they're only human and they really do just want to help you. After all, it's their job and most of them want to help you.

4. Step outside of your comfort zone.

College is the best time to try new things. Join a student organization, take up new hobbies, or rush a sorority/fraternity. Getting involved on campus is truly one of the most rewarding part of the whole college experience, other than the degree, of course!

5. Learn to manage your time.

This is the hardest part of college. Hands down. Get involved, go out, get a job, but learn how to manage your time. This is the key to success in college. Get a planner, use your phone, whatever, just figure it out!

6. SLEEP!

Seriously, get some sleep. This is so incredibly important. Write it in your planner if you have to, just get some sleep. Without adequate sleep you will not be able to function in a way that will lead to success.

7. Self-confidence is the key to success.

I believe this wholeheartedly. You are the key to success. Believe that you can do whatever you set your mind to.

Take advantage of all that college has to offer. This is the greatest time in your life, or so I'm told, so we need to live in the moment. Have fun, make memories, and remember, no regrets.

Good luck, you've got this!

6 Signs You Are An English Major

There are various stereotypes about college students, most of which revolve around the concept of your major. Unfortunately, we often let stereotypes precede our own judgments, and we take what information is immediately available to us rather than forming our own opinions after considerable reflection. If I got a dollar for every time my friends have made a joke about my major I could pay my tuition. One stereotype on campus is the sensitive, overly critical and rigid English major. Here are six telltale signs you are one of them.

"The Office" is a mockumentary based on everyday office life featuring love triangles, silly pranks and everything in between. It can get pretty crazy for just an average day at the office.

When you were little, your parents probably told you television makes your brain rot so you wouldn't watch it for twelve straight hours. However, I feel we can learn some pretty valuable stuff from television shows. "The Office," while a comedy, has some pretty teachable moments thrown in there. You may not know how to react in a situation where a co-worker does something crazy (like put your office supplies in jello) but thanks to "The Office," now you'll have an idea how to behave ifsomething like that should happen.

Here are just a few of the things that religious Office watchers can expect to learn.
