Nowadays, summer internships have become a vital part in having a better chance in the business world after college. Most colleges and universities don’t start pushing the importance of an internship until junior year, but I have learned that it is never too early to start. So, even if you’re a freshman or a sophomore, you should put yourself out there because you have nothing to lose.
If you’re having trouble deciding whether you want to be an intern or not, or if you are already interning and need some tips on how to keep moving forward, keep reading because I have a few tips on how to survive your current/future summer internships.
Coffee will be your best friend.
College students have a bad habit of not getting enough sleep and well, summer is no different. In fact, it's worse during summer because our brains are in summer mode, making us want to binge-watch Netflix the night before work because we can. Bad choice though...
Always have a good attitude!
First impressions are what counts, and if you do not seem happy to be at your internship, they will take it the wrong way — so smile! Say good morning to everyone you see, be friendly! Even if you're dying to be in bed because you stayed up way too late watching "Grey's" on Netflix.
Dress to impress.
I know it's hot (especially if you live in Texas), but you have to rock that business attire like it's your job. Do not let yourself go just because you won't be coming back after this summer because you never know, you might make a good impression and they may want you back!
Go above and beyond.
Don't be afraid to be an overachiever! Interns usually have deadlines on tasks that need to be done. Work your butt off and get things done before deadlines, but don't get me wrong, if you are getting things done before deadlines, make sure that they are done well.
Focus!
We all love to think we can multitask. Well ... I'm sorry to break it to you, but we really are not that gifted. So, put your phone down and get to work. You can live without Twitter and Instagram for a few hours!
Ask questions.
We also love to think we know everything and the hard truth is that we don't and we never will. So, if you have questions ask them! There will never be a stupid question, so don't be embarrassed. I can assure you that the people you are working for would rather you ask them a million questions before making a mistake.
Take it all in.
These are real world experiences that don't come along easily. So, learn as much as you can and enjoy it because internships are huge opportunities for college students just like you and me.
I know summer is supposed to be fun and a time to de-stress for college students and that internships don’t sound appealing at all, but they will be worth it. Internships can be paid or unpaid. I know what you’re thinking, “Why would I want to spend my summer working and not getting paid?” Well, to be honest it is the experience that counts. If you are lucky enough to have a paid internship, then that is a plus, but what you really should be getting out of an internship is the experience that you will use in the real world — and who knows? It might even open doors for you in the future.
