How to Survive Working in an Office

Make your space as inviting as possible.

Add small, personal touches to your space that makes it feel like yours - some art, photos, stuffed animals, or other small reminders of things you enjoy that will make you smile. (My boyfriend's dad likes to display his Star Wars Lego sets).

Wear clothes that make you happy.

Office clothes don't have to be boring! Add pops of your favorite color or crazy accessories from your favorite fandom. Follow your company's dress-code, but add your own pizzazz!

Cartoon-ize your coworkers during office meetings.

This is THE BEST way to keep from zoning out! Your coworkers may get a kick out of it too. (Pictured above, my own doodle of two of my favorite coworkers!)

Utilize karma.

Make your co-workers feel appreciated, even if you don't feel that they appreciate you. What goes around comes around. And even if it doesn't, your co-workers may be more pleasant to work with.

Bring in treats once in awhile.

Donuts just make everybody happier. Enough said.

Tell jokes.

Never underestimate the power of a good joke or perfectly-timed pun to relieve stress! You never know who might be having a hard day and need some cheering-up, however minimal or silly.

If possible, leave the office during your lunch break.

You don't have to go out to eat, just leave the building. Take your lunch to the park and eat outside. If you can't, at least leave your desk for a change of scenery and to avoid being pulled back into work during your break!

Get up, walk around, and stretch as much as you can.

Sitting hunched over at keyboard for hours is not healthy. Frequent movement and stretching will help prevent muscle cramps and headaches.

Celebrate random holidays.

There's a whacky holiday for just about every day of the year. Keep an eye out for opportunities celebrate those you work with (i.e. National Doctor's Day), and quirky "holidays" that are fun (i.e. National Waffle Day).

Do an occasional office prank.

The occasional office prank keeps life interesting and fun! Just make sure you don't do anything that would cause harm or significantly hinder work performance, and get a supervisor's permission first.

Be a pleasant person to work with.

You're part of a special group of humans who are stuck together for 8 hours each day. You might as well make the most of it and be the best human in the bunch (or the one disliked the least)!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
