I would have never considered myself addicted to my cell phone until it broke. I lost four years of pictures, contacts and account information when my phone decided to turn off and not turn back on again.
For three days, I was slightly depressed, disoriented and found myself in very inconvenient situations. I was unable to use my GPS, set an alarm, look at my calendar for the events that week or reach any of my family or friends because I’m so used to pressing their name on speed dial.
How much do you rely on your phone? Why do we allow ourselves to rely on a device that can break in an instant without a reasonable cause?
This is our generation now, upset that our show didn’t record or that we forgot to back up years of information causing us to lose sight of who we are and our week.
It’s almost sad how much we lose when our technology is turned off, but what can we gain from this knowledge?
Maybe we should try to have a backup no matter what or remember phone numbers that are important to us, maybe print out pictures to have physically forever in an album is better than on our camera roll.
I’m not sure what is better or worse, but as these generations progress, we will be relying more and more on technology and less and less on others and ourselves.
I challenge you to go a full day without your phone and when you feel anxious write down why. After three days, I have experienced instances where I went to grab my phone but for what purpose? Just to check it.
How much time do we waste checking our phone? But also how much information do we store on our phones?
There is no way to change the mindsets that we have towards the technology in our life, but it’s important to take a step back and realize how we can improve our lives by knowing more and relying on them less.
