It’s December, so for those of us who are fortunate enough to live in places that actually have white Christmases, this one is for you. It’s snowing, it’s beautiful, and for some of us (especially out-of-state students), it’s a little treacherous walking to class in these elements. Here are my tips for surviving that cold, snowy walk to class. Good luck, and don’t fall!
1. Bundle up.
It’s no fun to be freezing on the walk to class. Dress in layers so you don’t overheat once you get to class.
2. Wear shoes with good traction.
They might not be the most attractive footwear, but it’s also not attractive to fall on your butt in front of hundreds of people, is it?
3. Look where you’re walking.
The sidewalks aren’t always plowed as nicely as we hope, so please look where you’re walking. Avoid the big puddles and the giant patches of ice at all costs.
4. Don’t rush.
Give yourself an extra five minutes to get to class on time. Trust me, if you walk fast, you will slip. It’s inevitable.
5. Walk like a penguin.
Waddle if you have to; it actually helps. No wonder penguins survive living in Antarctica!
6. Listen to some good Christmas songs.
It’ll put you in the holiday spirit and maybe you’ll forget about the cold. Maybe.
7. Hold the railing when you go up or down steps.
You can prevent many embarrassing slips this way. You don't want to be this person.
8. Stay inside for as long as you can.
If your school has a tunnel system connecting buildings, use it!
9. Take the bus.
If you are able to take a bus to class, take it. Even if you don’t have to walk very far, I won’t judge you if you take the bus down the street if it's below zero.
