During Monday's first presidential debate between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, Google had a 2200 percent surge in search interest in the phrase "registrarse para votar." The highest amount of searches came from the swing state Florida, followed by Texas, New York, California, and New Jersey. The last comparable spike within this election occurred after Trump made his immigration speech in Phoenix, Arizona. This surge can partly be credited to Google's effort to encourage Hispanic voters to register. Google added in depth information for registering how to vote-- all in Spanish. Google added custom information including state by state information on key registration deadlines and steps on how to vote early or by mail.
Google's increase in Hispanic voter registration outreach is part of President Obama and Hillary Clinton's effort to increase the amount of Latinos who go out and vote. According to a Pew Research Center survey conducted this year, only 50 percent of Latinos are sure that they are registered to vote-- which trails black voters at 69 percent and white voters at 80 percent.
Hopefully, with an increase in accessibility, Latinos will be more encouraged to make it out to the polls and let their voices be heard.
