I recently finished watching the show Supernatural on Netflix. It has twelve seasons, and a thirteenth premiering in mid October. The entire show has been incredible, and i broke down the seasons in hopes that more people would watch it.
Season 1
Probably the scariest season in Supernatural, this season introduces demon-hunting brothers Sam and Dean Winchester and their quest to find their father, who has seemingly disappeared. Sam, who had run off to go to law school, reunites with Dean and gives up on his dream (and his girlfriend) to go find his father. After his girlfriend dies by the same means as his mother, Mary, Sam goes full time hunting, vowing to kill the thing that killed his girlfriend.
Season 2
The yellow-eyed demon that killed Mary and Sam’s girlfriend, whose name we learn is Azazel, made a deal with Sam and Dean’s father, John, trading John’s soul for Dean’s when Dean almost dies in a car accident. New fan favorite characters such as Bobby (the boys’ father figure), Ellen (the boys' mother figure), and Jo (the boys’ sister figure) are introduced. Azazel rounds up psychic kids like Sam and has then fight to the death. When Sam dies, Dean makes a deal with a crossroads demon - his soul for Sam’s. Sam comes back to life and Dean has a year left to live.
Season 3
This is the shortest season of Supernatural with only 16 episodes. This season focuses on Dean’s inevitable death and Sam trying to find a way out of Dean’s deal. The brothers meet a “good” demon named Ruby who claims she wants to help them. She mentions a new “big bad” named Lilith, who becomes the main focus of the third and fourth seasons. In the finale episode, Dean dies with about two minutes left.
Season 4
Season 4 opens up with Dean crawling out of a wooden casket, alive, not sure who got him out of hell. He makes his way to Bobby’s house and the two track down Sam, whom we later find out is rooming with the demon Ruby. We later find out that the angel Castiel dragged Dean out of hell, and Cas becomes a big part of the rest of the seasons. Sam has a demon side, and he gives in to drinking demon blood to fuel his powers. Dean and Sam kill Ruby and Lilith in the last episode and unleash Lucifer.
Season 5
The whole purpose of this season was Dean and Sam putting Lucifer back in the cage. Castiel searches for God, who has apparently disappeared. Jo and Ellen died in this season. Dean and Castiel’s friendship grows stronger, while Dean and Sam’s relationship falls apart. Sam allows Lucifer to possess him, confident that he can hold Lucifer off long enough to drag both of them into the pit. He manages to do that, condemning himself to death. The last scene of season 5 showed Sam standing outside of the house that Dean was staying in, in his new relationship.
Season 6
Sam reveals himself to Dean after a year, and after a few episode, viewers discover that Sam no longer has a soul. Death, who is one of the four horsemen, agrees to retrieve Sam’s soul from hell and put it back in his body, but builds a wall in Sam’s mind to prevent him from remembering what happened to him in hell. Castiel and Crowley, the king of hell, were secretly working together, and Cas took Sam’s body out of the cage so that he can hunt Alpha monsters and deliver them to Crowley. The brothers find out, and to throw them off, Castiel takes down the wall in Sam’s mind and moves on with his plan: to become God.
Season 7
When Castiel took in all the souls from Purgatory to become God, he accidentally dragged the Leviathans in, who begin attempting to get free. Castiel seems to die from the Leviathans, while Dean and Sam sadly look on. However, the Leviathans still run free, and the leader possesses Dick Roman, who is a huge leader with a lot of money. Roman eventually kills Bobby, which infuriates Dean. The spirit of Bobby continues to show up throughout the season, helping Dean and Sam out in a few cases. The brothers track down Kevin Tran, a new college student who becomes the prophet of God, and try to stop the Leviathans. He manages to read some of the demon tablet, which would expel the Leviathans. Castiel and Dean kill Roman in the end, but his essence drags the two to Purgatory, where every bad monster goes when they die.
Season 8
Dean comes back from Purgatory, alone. He befriends a vampire named Benny and brings him back to the mortal world with him. The Winchesters reunite and fight against Crowley and close the Gates of Hell, meaning no demon can come out. Metatron, the scribe of God, appears to be helping them, but he has a secret plan to become God. Castiel is brought back by an angel. Metatron tells the brothers that one of them has to go through three trials. However, Dean forcibly stops Sam from completely them as Sam would die. Metatron becomes God and expels all the angels from Heaven.
Season 9
The fallen angels search for Castiel, who they think started all this trouble. Sam came close to dying from the trials and Dean allows whom he thinks is the angel Ezekiel possess him to fix him up. Dean doesn’t tell Sam that an angel is possessing him. Eventually, they find out that the angel Ezekiel died in the fall, and the angel possessing Sam is Gadreel, who allowed the serpent into the Garden of Eden way back. Gadreel is on Metatron’s side. The brothers bond together to kill Abaddon, who came from the mid 1900s with the First Blade. The First Blade was the first murder instrument in the world, used when Cain killed his brother Abel. Cain gave the Mark of Cain to Dean, so that Dean could use the First Blade. The Mark causes Dean to act out and have a thirst for murder. Castiel gains control of the angels and starts a war against Metatron. Dean kills Abaddon, Cas defeats Metatron, and Metatron kills Dean. The Mark doesn’t allow Dean to die, instead turning him into a demon.
Season 10
Dean and Crowley bonded over Dean becoming a demon. Sam and Castiel try, and succeed, to cure Dean of being a demon and give the First Blade to Crowley, as Dean still has the Mark. Dean is not able to control to Mark, and hurts his friend Charlie. Charlie suggests that they use the Book of the Damned to get the Mark off of Dean. The threesome tries to get help from the witch Rowena, who is Crowley’s mother. Charlie is murdered for trying to decode the Book. In the last episode, Death tells Dean he can put him on another planet, saving the world from the Mark. However, Dean would have to kill Sam. Dean ends up killing Death and Rowena manages to get the Mark off of Dean releasing the Darkness into the world.
Season 11
The Darkness takes a form in a baby girl, Amara. Amara grows up ridiculously fast, and eats souls. Crowley steals the baby from the Winchesters and raises her in hell. Amara and Dean are somehow bonded because Dean used to possess the Mark, and Amara is the Mark. Castiel implores Metatron for help, who tells the trio that Amara is God’s sister. Castiel lets Lucifer possess him because Lucifer says he can beat Amara. Lucifer expels Crowley as the king of hell and kills Rowena, but she comes back a few episodes later. A character from earlier seasons, Chuck, comes back, and reveals that he is God. Amara fatally injures Chuck and tells him that she will kill him when she destroys the world. Lucifer gets expelled from Castiel’s body. Chuck tells the brothers that the only way to defeat Amara is to kill her and him together, so they create a bomb that they put in Dean, who will sacrifice himself. Amara realizes that she doesn’t want to destroy everything, so she and Chuck leave Earth together, going to make up for lost time. Chuck takes the bomb out of Dean and Amara gives Dean a present for helping her. He finds out that his mother has been resurrected by Amara. Sam and Castiel, who think Dean died, go back to the bunker where they live and encounter Lady Bevell, who was a part of the London Men of Letters. She sends Cas away and shoots Sam.
Season 12
Lady Bevell tortures Sam to get other hunters’ information, which he will not give up. Dean and his mother, Mary, reunite. Dean and Mary return to the bunker, find Cas, and search for Sam. Dean and Mary find Sam. Lucifer tirelessly looks for a vessel and eventually settles on a rock star, and then the President, who was sleeping with an aide. Lucifer impregnates the aide and a devil child will be born. Mary teams up with the British Men of Letters, regardless of the fact that they had tortured Sam. The Winchesters exorcise the President and Crowley puts the spirit back into his old vessel, which he had warded so Lucifer can’t get out. The finale had so many details crammed into it. Lucifer kills Rowena for good and Castiel entered a post-apocalyptic world in which Lucifer took over. He bring Sam and Dean so they could see. Crowley gives himself up, using a spell that will kill him and seal Lucifer in a post-apocalyptic world. Before the world closes, Dean, Sam, and Castiel get back to the real world, but Lucifer is able to follow and kills Castiel. Mary throws herself at Lucifer and the two of them get trapped in the post-apocalyptic world. Dean can’t get over Castiel’s death and Sam runs into the house where the baby was born and finds Lucifer’s son, Jack, who is a teenager.
Season 13
The thirteenth season of Supernatural airs on October 12, 2017. We can assume that this season will focus on Jack, Lucifer’s son, and what he does to the world. Spoilers have revealed that Cas will come back, but not in a normal way. Crowley will apparently possess a different body, causing fans to dub him “Crowley 2.0”. No one is sure what to expect, but we expect it to be very good.
