Why The World Needs A Superman

Who can we look up to in this world?

“Ecuador earthquake: More than 440 killed”
“Dozens die in Afghanistan as Taliban attacks”
“Officials: At least 28 dead, over 300 wounded in Kabul attack”
“Ethiopia attack: 200 people dead, 100 children missing”

Recent world news headline read like an apocalyptic novel. Tragedy ensues everywhere at the blink of an eye. It is in these moments we need a Superman. We would love to have somebody show up to make us feel safe, to look up in the sky and see hope, instead of the horror happening in front of us. People are sacrificing their lives helping others, they are striving to do better and struggling to do so. We have terrorist attacks, mass shootings, earthquakes, and other unimaginable, fearful events happening. The world has become a scary, horrible, and unpredictable place to live. What does this fear do to us when we are afraid? We act out and make hasty judgments and decisions. We have Brazil dealing with the Zika outbreak, a devastating earthquake in Japan, Ecuador rescue efforts are slowing down, and thousands are fleeing the Eastern Congo after several refuges camps had a clash between the army and rebels.

The world is a broken place in which we live. We lie, we cheat, we steal from one another. But on the positive side, we also rebuild and come together when we need to, we can strive to overcome the odds and to become something better than before. It would be nice to have a Superman in our world... but look in the mirror. You can be that Superman or Superwoman to someone. Go against the odds, help someone out in need. Be their hero, because this beautiful planet of ours is suffering, we are tearing each other apart, day by day. But that can change today, and it can begin with you.

Founded by Ben Affleck, The Eastern Congo Initiative helps out the community and helps revitalize the coffee section in the Congo.

Project Kumamoto helps out the victims of the Japan Earthquake with recovery support and relief efforts.

UNICEF has created this donation site to help the victims of the devastating earthquake in Ecuador. UNICEF stands ready to provide food, water, shelter, protection, and healthcare both before and after the tragedy.

Save the Children was "created" in 1984 in Ethiopia and is working in 70 percent of the worst-affected districts, providing food, water, medicine, and crucial support to families who have lost their incomes.

It's officially December. There is less than a month of 2024, and I still feel like yesterday was summer. Now comes the merriest time of the year, the Christmas season.

Everyone has been waiting for this time of year since mid-October (which is way too early, in my opinion) or before. It's a time of love, family, memory-making, and gift-giving. A lot of times when I ask friends and family what they want, I get a lot of "I don't know" or "I don't care."
