As a nanny, I was beginning to feel old when kids would ask me what year I was born and they would "ooh" and "ahh" over 1994. Until I read about Emma Morano three days ago.
Emma Morano might be one of the oldest people living people on the planet; she was born in 1899, so she's 116 right now.
A lot of people say they wouldn't want to live as old as Emma has, but from everything I've read about her so far, she's still pretty healthy and self-sufficient. She lives on her own still, with the occasional house call from the doctor.
It got me thinking -- I would actually love to live to be old like Emma if I had no serious health complications. Here's why:
1. Family
Yes, it would suck living to see much of your family pass away, but think about all of the family you'd get to see grow up or be born. Personally, I want kids, so if I lived to be as old as Emma, I'd not only get to see my great grandkids grow up, but probably also my great great grandkids, and maybe even their kids, too.
2. You would be the best storyteller
I don't care what your communication skills are like; if you've been alive for over 100 years, you're going to have stories. And they're going to be insanely fascinating -- you have a perspective unlike anyone else's. You've actually experienced history firsthand.
3. Science
You're kind of like a walking miracle and probably every geneticist's dream. Maybe you could help the scientific community figure out what leads to longevity? Or maybe, like Emma, you'll just tell them the secret to a long life is being single.
And finally,
4. Your advice and opinions would matter
Everyone would hang on to your every word and actually listen to you and value your thoughts (if for no other reason than they figure they could very well be your last). It's a little comforting to know that when I'm old and wise people may value my opinions more, because I have lots of them.
Emma, you have inspired me; I hope I get to see the world spin as long as you have.
