Why I'm Super Excited For My IQP

With A Term finally over (took long enough!), I cannot wait to delve into my Interactive Qualifying Project (IQP) this B Term with the Water Resource Outreach Center in Worcester, Massachusetts. My team and I will be completing a project that creates an educational program for the Central Massachusetts region on stormwater but that's not even the start as to why I am so excited to begin!

1. Working with MassDEP every day.

Getting to work with a Massachusetts statewide organization for my IQP is only but a dream come true!

2. Interviewing officials from around the state.

From directors of science museums to engineers of municipal departments, our team gets to seemingly talk to them all!

3. Seeing what fellow ID 2050-ers are up to.

Our classmates from ID 2050 are doing projects with Habitat for Humanity, the Princeton Historical Society and the Community Harvest project. After seeing their final presentations, I can't wait to see where their projects go!

4. Figuring out what works and doesn't work as a team.

While it's extremely easy to disagree with teammates, it'll be exciting as a team to decide what works best for the Central MA region.

5. No classes and a real work day!

This sounds bad but this means I get to go back to my place at night and on weekends, having nothing to do! That's insane for a WPI student.

6. Going to official meetings.

Our team has already been to one for the Central Massachusetts Regional Stormwater Coalition and got to meet the Lieutenant Governor of the state!

7. Having events with other IQP groups.

I just recently learned that there are activities planned for the WPI Worcester, MA IQP students, including a visit to the Worcester Art Museum!

8. Creating our own educational program and implementing it.

It may be like the above ThinkBlue Maine program but who knows!

9. Having the ability to make a change in the local Central MA area.

While I have been in Central MA for a long time (since I was born), it is going to be so rewarding to credit a project that helps the Central MA region.

10. Creating a final project that my team and I are proud of.

We don't buy into these... just like how we don't buy our friends.

Being a part of any organization undoubtedly comes with the pitfalls of being grouped into negative stereotypes, and sororities are certainly no exception. Here are the top few things, that I find at least, are some of the most irritating misconceptions that find their way into numerous conversations...

8. "The whole philanthropy thing isn't real, right?"

Well all those fundraisers and marketing should would be a waste then wouldn't they?

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.
