Super Bowl Prediction

Who will make the big game?

As the end of the 2016 NFL regular season starts to wind down, there is only one thing on everybody's mind. The playoffs and of course the Super Bowl.

As most know, the Super Bowl is the championship game of football in which one team from the AFC (American Football Conference) will face off against one team from the NFC (National Football Conference). So, who will make it this year?

In the AFC, the powerhouse is the New England Patriots. As of December 19th, the New England Patriots are 12-2 and have just clinched a first round bye. The second best team in the AFC is the Oakland Raiders at 11-3, then followed bt the Kansas City Chiefs at 10-4. So, if everything ended today, the Patriots and the Raiders would have a first round bye and the since the Patriots are the #1 seed they would face the winner of the lower wild card seed (Miami or Pittsburgh) while Oakland would face the higher wild card seed (Chiefs or Texans). So, let's say this all plays out; I would take Pittsburgh over Miami to face New England and Kansas City over Houston to face Oakland.

In a battle of New England against Pittsburgh, in New England, it would be hard to bet against the Patriots. The Patriots this year already beat the Steelers in Pittsburgh by a score of 27-16. Tom Brady is 15-3 during home playoff games in his career, so I am taking New England.

In an AFC West battle between the Raiders and the Chiefs, I am taking the Chiefs. Kansas City this year has already beat Oakland twice, once in Oakland and once in Kansas City. Andy Reid seems to do an excellent job game planning against Derek Carr, and the Oakland Raiders. Since Carr was drafted by the Raiders in 2014, Andy Reid and the Chiefs company hold a record of 5-1 against the Raiders. In this six-game spread, the Chiefs are 2-1 against the Raiders in Oakland. I am picking Kansas City.

So now we have an AFC Championship matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and the New England Patriots. The last time these two faced off was in January of earlier this year (the technical 2015-2016 season) where the Patriots would go on to win by a score of 27-20. Brady threw for over 300 yards and two touchdowns. My opinion, if you give the Patriots a home AFC Championship game, another chance for Brady to go to the Super Bowl after this whole "deflategate" scandal, no way he loses. I'm taking the Patriots as the kings of the AFC.

Now, time for the NFC.

The NFC's real powerhouse by the record is the Dallas Cowboys, at 12-2. The second best team? The team that handed the Cowboys their two losses, the New York Giants. The Giants sit at 10-4 but since they are in the same division as the Cowboys, and won't win the division that means they will not get the first round by and would need to compete in the wildcard. The two teams rewarded a first round bye would be the Dallas Cowboys and the Seattle Seahawks (9-4-1). The Dallas Cowboys will play the lower wild card seed (Redskins or Falcons) and the Seahawks would player the higher wild card seed (Giants or Lions). If this were to all remain the same, I would take the Falcons over the Redskins to play against the Cowboys and the Giants for the Lions to play the Seahawks.

In a battle of a rookie duel with the Cowboys and the experienced, yet inexperienced Falcons team, I am going to pick the Falcons. Between Matt Ryan, Julio Jones, Devonta Freeman and even Aldrick Robinson, that is a tough offense to stop especially when the Cowboys defense is average. And then, on the defensive side of the ball, the Falcons are led by an emerging star in Vic Beasly at linebacker and Desmond Trufant at corner. Do I think Zeke and Dak will have a great game? Sure, why not. But, I think it'll come down to a two-minute drive, and I believe the Falcons will be the ones that shock the world and steal the W.

Between the Giants and Seahawks, I am taking the Seahawks. Richard Sherman would lock down Odell Beckham Jr. and even if OBJ would be able to get past Sherman he would have to deal with Kam Chancellor. The Giants have no rush and a weak offensive line; I would expect a lot of blitzes from Bobby Wagner and pressure from Michael Bennett to force Eli Manning to rush his throws.

So, now a battle between the Atlanta Falcons and the Seattle Seahawks to decide who goes to the Super Bowl. Atlanta, trying to make their second Superbowl appearance in 18 years while Seattle would be looking to make their third Superbowl in four years. In this matchup, I would take Seattle. I believe Seattle has so much more depth and experience in these type of games. Seattle can beat you in every way on defense, and their offense can put up 30+ points quickly. I am rolling with the Seattle Seahawks.

So, now the Superbowl. The Seattle Seahawks vs. the New England Patriots. Deja vu.

Oh wow, how this would piss people off. Two of the most hated teams in the NFL squaring off against each other in the Superbowl, AGAIN.

So, we did see the Seattle Seahawks come away with a victory these last time these two faced off. But, the victory did have a little controversy to it... I am going to leave this picture here, and you can tell me whether you believe this should have been a penalty.

But, a win is a win.

In a Super Bowl rematch, though, I would still roll with Brady and the Patriots. The way Tom Brady has looked and how streaky that Seahawks offense can be; I have to go with New England. The Super Bowl, to me, has been about the offense the past few years. Sure, we saw Denver's defense stick it to Cam Newton and the Panthers, but let's be honest here, was that offense that good or were they just a one-year wonder team? I believe Brady would match, if not pass, his numbers in Super Bowl XLIX.

My bet is that Roger Goodell will be handing Tom Brady his fifth Vince Lombardi Trophy.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
