Be Your Own Superhero

You will always be enough

We live in a world where dependency is the way we function. We depend on our parents to tell us what to do, the Internet to tell us what things are, friends to get us through our bad days, significant others to make us smile. We grew up watching movies and reading stories that our superheroes are out there always waiting to save us at our darkest moments. The age of independency is not prevalent. We rely so heavily on others that we don’t know how to rescue ourselves. It’s time to be your own superhero.

Eventually you grow up and realize that people come and go, objects lose meaning and you sometimes just have to take on the world by yourself. There are times where you will find yourself struggling to find your way to a certain destination or not knowing what to write for a school project or maybe you messed up on your first day of work. The sad news is batman isn’t sprinting around the corner to save you; superman isn’t flying out of the sky to help you. You are your own superhero, and you’ll figure things out. The more you do for yourself, the happier you become and the more you realize that you are capable of so much more.

To be independent in a world that tries to tell you who to like, where to go, who to be, isn’t always easy. It’s easier to blend into the crowd and let others fix things for you. However, the true successful people are the ones that believed in and depended on themselves. To be your own superhero gives you more confidence and allows you to take more risks in life because for once it's not the internet finding the answer. It’s not your parents finding you the job. It’s not someone else making you happy. It's simply you, and that is and will always be enough.

Of course there are days that you will not only want but need others to help you through something. You can’t always expect yourself to do it all alone; all superheroes always need a sidekick. But the more you take it upon yourself to create your own happiness and success, the more significant you will feel in a world that once seemed too big to concur on your own. Don’t be afraid to be the superhero; you never know what you can accomplish.

In honor of Mother’s Day, I have been thinking of all the things my mom does for my family and me. Although I couldn’t write nearly all of them, here are a few things that moms do for us.

They find that shirt that’s right in front of you, but just you can’t seem to find.

10 Reasons To Thank Your Best Friend

Take the time to thank that one friend in your life you will never let go of.

Thank You on wooden blocks

1. Thank you for being the one I can always count on to be honest.

A true friend will tell you if the shirt is ugly, or at least ask to borrow it and "accidentally" burn it.

2. Thank you for accepting me for who I am.

A best friend will love you regardless of the stale french fries you left on the floor of your car, or when you had lice in 8th grade and no one wanted to talk to you.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!
