Summertime Blues: I Miss My College Buds

Summertime Blues: I Miss My College Buds

Summer vacation is approximately 11 weeks long, though it may be even longer for some. For most college students, the majority of their friends from college don't live in the same town or even in the same state as they do. Summer vacation for college students is not always a relaxing vacation because the time is usually spent working to replenish the bank account that was emptied with miscellaneous purchases while away at school. Not many get to see their friends from school, but some are lucky enough to get to spend a day or two with them. Since my summertime blues are a result of being away from my best friends, I want to take this opportunity to let them know I miss them.

It has been six weeks since I have left Marywood University for summer vacation. It only took me three days to see one of my best friends from school. Other than that, though, it has been a constant cycle of planning or trying to plan trips and weekends to see my friends. It's tough living so far from each other, especially when we all have our lives at home, which consist of our families and other friends, as well as jobs and summer courses. It makes me miss my friends, though, thinking about how much time we spent together in our daily routines; eating almost every meal together, watching our favorite award shows, practicing lacrosse in below 20-degree weather and going out and making fun memories that we will continue to make throughout our time left at college.

The time I have spent away from my friends has made me realize the type of relationship we share and how lucky I am to have such amazing friends. The friends you make in college are the friends you keep for life. You know them better than anyone. You know all their little obsessions, such as vampires, as well as where they keep their secret, hidden stash of snacks, like dried mangos. You know all there is to know about them, such as their past relationships, go-to drink, and class schedules. I miss the late night cuddle sessions and endless rants about things that end up being pointless in the morning.

I know our time away from each other isn't too long, but I find myself bored and wanting to say inside jokes that only we understand. There may be times where I am busy and don't have time to chat, but that never means I'm not thinking about you or missing you because I do miss you. As nice as it is to be home and away from school work, I still miss being together at school. My time away from my people made me realize that they are irreplaceable and that no matter the distance or time apart, when we reunite, everything will be right back to the way we left it.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
