6 Fun Facts About Summer Solstice

Have you noticed that the sun stays up later during the summer and shines light until 8:30 p.m. or later? There's a term for this extra daylight––solstice. How did the day receive its name? Why is it the longest day of the year? Take advantage of the extra time outdoors. The longest day of the year is the perfect time to play a game of soccer, have a beach bonfire, or sit on the back porch and escape from busy life with a great novel. This year's summer solstice occurs on Tuesday, June 20 or Wednesday, June 21 (depending on location). Impress others and read through these six fun facts about summer solstice.

1. The sun reaches its northernmost position, as seen from Earth, then stands still at the Tropic of Cancer until it reverses direction and moves south again.

2. Solstice comes from the latin word solsitium (sun stands still). The day received its name because the sun appears to stand still due to the way the Earth tilts.

3. Any place above the equator experiences daytime for at least 12 hours.

4. It generally occurs on the first day of summer.

5. The time of solstice varies by location. Find your time here.

6. People all over the world celebrate it. Check out some of the best celebrations in the Northern Hemisphere.

Even when I did go out, it was usually with a bunch of fellow band geeks. The night would end before 11:00 PM and the only controversial activity would be a fight based on who unfairly won a round of Apples-to-Apples when someone else clearly had a better card (I promise I'm not still holding a grudge).

Now that I'm officially an adult, I want to pursue some new things. I want to experience life in a way that I never allowed myself to do prior to entering college. These are the years that I'm supposed to embark on a journey of self-discovery, so what better way to do that than to create a bucket list?
