Everybody always looks forward to summer vacation. No school, no responsibilities and the chance to hang out with friends pretty much all the time is great. However, in a small town, summer vacation isn't all it's cracked up to be.
Most small towns don't really have a lot of activities, so most days you pretty much end up sitting in your house trying to think of something to do that doesn't require driving for 30 plus minutes and doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Most of the time, that is about as far as you get for the day, watching marathons of Law and Order SVU or Cupcake Wars.
If you have a job, that pretty much takes up all of your time. This is totally fine though because while at first you think that work makes it so you don't have a life, you soon realize work is your life. You really don't have anything better to do. Plus, you get paid for it!
On the days you do have plans, sometimes just getting to the place takes longer than you spend there. Typically, everyone that is going lives pretty far apart from each other, so it takes at least 25 minutes to get everyone together. Then, you have to drive for a questionably long amount of time to get to your destination because you literally have nothing around you, except a Walmart if you're lucky.
Hopefully, you get a chance to go on a vacation over the summer. Whether it's a weekend trip with friends or a family vacation to the beach, it's pretty much the best shot at some real fun during the summer. Sometimes, even these trips can be ruined, and believe me, I have some stories.
It doesn't take long for the glamour of summer vacation to wear off, and you remember that summer isn't actually that great. You had so many expectations of all the things you can do while away from school for almost three months but realize how difficult it is to actually pull them off. Living in a small town can make summer a lot less exciting than you want it to be, but when you do get to enjoy yourself, you remember that you still love summer.
