The first week I got home from college I slept until two in the afternoon...every day. I enjoy nothing more than a lazy day spent either sleeping or lounging in my bed. I have three mattresses, eight pillows and more blankets than I care to count. Needless to say the draw of my bed is very strong and my ability to resist is very low. However, just because I can sleep the day away does not mean I should.
It is extremely important to get a full night of sleep. The recommended hours of sleep are eight. So if you are out late and end up going to bed on the later side than sleeping in makes sense. This is the exception not the real. As appealing as it is to sleep all day every day, there is so much to do and it can be a waste of time.
If you are not sleeping you might want to try relaxing in another place. When I am at school I spend almost all of my free time on or in my bed. Dorm rooms are extremely small and often times the only place to sit or hang out is the bed. Personally, I often find my desk chair uncomfortable and prefer to do work sitting on my bed. The issue with this is that it may negatively impact your sleep schedule. According to psychological research, doing anything in your bed besides sleeping can lead you to associate it with that other activity. If you write a paper you are stressed about in bed, you can subconsciously associate your bed with stress. This makes it harder to relax in your bed and fall asleep.
Now I know that I am no one to preach about good bed etiquette. I love sleeping in and do so fairly often. Even now I am writing this article while lounging on my bed. That being said, I am trying to get up and out of my house more. Summer is a great opportunity to go on adventures or accomplish activities you do not typically have time for. So take advantage of the opportunity and get up in the morning!
