While I am not quite yet experienced with the concept of college, since the only experience I have is my dual enrollment at the University of Texas at Rio Grande, I did learn and notice a few things that some college students are definitely not taking advantage of. YES! Just like the headline states, summer semesters definitely deserve more recognition than the fall & spring. While many can argue that fall and spring are definitely important, here are 3 reasons that will rebuttal any arguments made against my headline.
1) Same education, shorter time-span
The most important reason why you should take advantage of summer classes is that you get the same education from a class you could take in the fall or spring and finish it in exactly a month! Who needs more convincing than that? No one wants to spend a long time in college when the opportunity is in front of your eyes. Summer is the way to go!
2) More repetition = more learning
The reason why summer semesters are short is because there is class everyday! While some people find that as a reason not to take advantage of them because they are physically and mentally exhausting or conflicts with their schedule, you get more repetition! I can't stress this enough!!! Yes, fall & spring semesters only require you to meet twice a week, but you only get to review course content sporadically instead of everyday. Meeting and reviewing course content daily engraves knowledge easier and as my mom always says, "something well learned, is never forgotten." With more repetition comes open communication with professors. But isn't it the same with fall and spring? No, it is not because summer classes tend to have smaller class sizes, opening a more one-on-one discussion with your professor that allows you to acquire more knowledge on something the book may have missed on. You definitely begin forming connections with your professors and ultimately gain an internship or more help for your major. Believe me, they've been there and done that, so don't be afraid to keep in contact with them.
3) It's cheaper
Most universities calculate the cost of 4 years of college, only including fall and spring because students only tend to apply for FAFSA for those semesters. But let me tell you this, more financial aid is awarded to applicants who apply for summer semesters according to U.S News & World Report. Classes are also a lot cheaper if students opt to attend a less expensive community college, with the notion that credits will transfer. Since not that many people are enrolled in summer classes, used textbooks are readily available.
While these are my top three reasons why summer deserves more recognition, I've included this link where U.S News & World Report supports my article. Thank you for reading!
