Summer Road Trip Essentials

It’s the season of suntans, sandy toes, fruity drinks, and sunset kisses. For a lot of us land-locked folks that also means packing up the car and heading for the beach, lake, or some other kind of summer getaway. Loading up the car can be a lot like a game of Tetras, figuring out what can go where and what needs to be within reach. Rolling your clothes to fit more in your suitcase and using travel size makeup, lotions, and perfumes can help create a more comfortable car ride environment. Whether your summer road trip includes mom, dad, and the rest of the gang, or a group of you and your friends there are some things to bring along that are essential to a successful trip.

1. Sunglasses

In these summer months, the sun is both hot and bright and if you’re thinking about tackling the open road, these are a must. There are plenty of places that you can pick up a stylish pair of shades at a price that won’t break the summer budget.

2. Sunscreen

On the topic of the sun, unless you want a sunburn to be a part of you’re vacation scrapbook, decent SPF sunscreen is a good thing to slip in the beach bag or glove-compartment. Even if you’re looking to get a great tan, taking care of your skin is important.

3. A Good Playlist

No road trip is complete without a good music playlist to sing along to with the windows down. Whether you decide to go old school and make up some mix CDs or plug in a summery Spotify playlist remember that the music has the power to set the tone for the trip. (I recommend adding some Calvin Harris, Chainsmokers, or Troy Sivan to your playlist).

4. Snacks

Snacks are absolutely essential to a successful summer road trip. Bring on the Twizzlers, Goldfish, and Capri Suns. (And don’t forget water bottles to hydrate!)

5. Technology

While part of the appeal of being out on the open road is getting away from electronics, having things like phone chargers and Siri or GPS handy is always nice. Especially if none of you have any idea where you’re going.

6. Entertainment

While the company you’re traveling with should be entertainment enough: a book, magazine, pillow, or headphones might be handy if that “good company” starts to piss you off around hour six.

7. Last Minute Toss-Ins

Chapstick, lip gloss, baby wipes, napkins, gum, mints, spare change for toll roads, and something to write with all might come in handy depending on your destination or the messes you make along the way.

Additionally, packing things like a beach towel, bathing suit, and flip-flops are necessities when beach hopping of hotel pool dipping. Adding a sundress, some wedges, or a dress shirt for a night out might also come in handy.

Make the most of your summer vacation and travel smart and safe!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
