With summer coming to a close, I crafted the perfect playlist for you to end your summer the best way possible: with music.

The playlist features many Bay Area artists, partially because I’m a little biased as it's where I call home, but also because the Bay area is home to some amazing and raw talent. If you're not already listening to them, you should be. In no particular order, here is my Music Monday Playlist.

1. "Subway Car" – Marc E. Bassy

FOR FANS OF: Bryson Tiller, Kehlani, Tory Lanez, Skizzy Mars, Majid Jordan

Born in San Francisco and currently based in East Los Angeles, Marc E. Bassy (pronounced Bass-e) is an up-and-coming singer/rapper who has left an impression on the hip-hop and R&B music community. His smooth vocals, upbeat rapping and catchy beats captivate you from the first note. His latest albums “East Hollywood” and “Only the Poets,” featuring popular artists such as Kehlani, G-Eazy, and Ty Dolla $ign, offer a unique spin to his music after splitting from his band 2AM Club and starting his solo career. Marc E. Bassy wowed the Occidental College community when he opened for Dom Kennedy at Springfest with his jam-packed funky set. His newest EP, "Groovy People" has certainly stood out among the new releases among other artists. “Subway Car” is my favorite song from the EP, particularly because of his soulful and powerful lyrics accompanied by a smooth melody.

2. "Caroline" – Aminé

FOR FANS OF: Anderson Paak, Miguel, Goldlink, Kaytranada

Adam Daniels, who uses his middle name Aminé (pronounce uh-mean-aye) for his stage name, is finding a new sound by taking inspiration from his Ethiopian immigrant parents and filtering the sound through hip hop, R&B and electronic beats and sound. Though displeased with his first album “Odyssey to Me” due to its “mismatched production” and “[unstructured] sound” (so displeased that he took it of Soundcloud, his next album “Calling Brio” went back to his Ethiopian roots and allowed him to make something he was truly proud of (Wweek). Though most known for his Kaytranada remix “Not At All,” his newest song “Caroline” will surely be a favorite on your playlist. His Soundcloud features all of his music, so I have included the link below.

3. "Don’t Know How" - PARTYNEXTDOOR

FOR FANS OF: Drake, Bryson Tiller, Kehlani, Jeremih, ILOVE MAKONNEN

Though primarily known for his producing skills, the self-titled albums of Jahron Brathwaite, or PARTYNEXTDOOR, are well known among R&B/Hip-Hop listeners. The artist to be signed with Drake’s OVO Sound label is known for experimenting with minimal hip-hop, R&B and reggae to create a smooth, catchy and relaxed sound. His most well known songs, “Come and See Me” and “Recognize,” both featuring Drake, are necessary songs to add to your music library and his new song “Don’t Know How” from his newest album “PARTYNEXTDOOR3” is no exception.

4. "LUV" – Tory Lanez

FOR FANS OF: Kid Ink, Drake, Bryson Tiller, Ty Dolla $ign, PARTYNEXTDOOR

Canadian singer and rapper Daystar Peterson, also known as Tory Lanez, is primarily known for his single “Say It," which peaked at number 23 on the Billboard Hot 100, but has many songs that feature a nice mixture of smooth and rugged beats. When asked to describe his musical style during an interview, Lanez responded with one word: swavey;

"Swavey is a two-adjective word. A lot of people use it as an attribute, but the real definition of swavey is a genre of music. The genre of music is the genre of fusing more than one together. I know it sounds strange, but if you ask an artist what they do they're going to say that they rap, they sing, they do rock-a lot of people are multi-talented. They get looked at confused, but I don't think that they're confused. I feel that they're just talented, swavey artists. Labels want to put you in one lane, but I feel like there are so many people are more than that and they're swavey artists."

LUV is no exception.

5. "CRZY" – Kehlani

FOR FANS OF: Jhene Aiko, PARTYNEXTDOOR, Justine Skye, Elijah Blake, Bryson Tiller, Tory Lanez

Kehlani, an Oakland R&B singer and songwriter, has recently taken the music industry by storm. Although originally starting as a member of Poplyfe, a band that competed on America’s Got Talent, this re-invented Jhené Aiko has had an amazing year so far. From performing shows around the world to being part of the movie soundtrack of “Suicide Squad,” the Bay Area artist has certainly been making a name for herself. Her songs and albums have featured popular artists including Chance the Rapper, BJ the Chicago Kid and G-Eazy who have recognized and celebrated her soulful voice and powerful lyrics. Kehlani started to blow up around the time she performed Occidental College's Fall Fest, impressing the crowd with her beautiful voice and awe-inspiring dance moves. CRZY, one of her most recent singles, is about confidence, power and kicking the people that bring you down to the curb, making it the perfect song to close out your summer.

6. "Cruel" (feat. ZAYN) – Snakeships

FOR FANS OF: Kiiara, Mura Masa, The Chainsmokers, Galantis

Snakeships are a duo made up of the U.K. producers Oliver Lee and James Carter. They combine electronic music with hip-hop and R&B to create a unique sound. Their most popular song “All My Friends,” released in October 2015 and featuring Tinashe and Chance the Rapper, really set off their career, becoming a worldwide hit. Since then, they’ve worked with many other artists, including Tory Lanez and Anderson Paak. "Cruel,” featuring Zayn (former member of One Direction) has become popular with Snakeships’s upbeat and funky beats and Zayn’s beautiful voice. Fun fact: Zayn actually wrote this song about his current girlfriend, Gigi Hadid.

7. "Every Night" – Kool John, P-Lo, Iamsu!

FOR FANS OF: A$AP Ferg, French Montana, YG, Meek Mill, Ty Dolla $ign

Kool John, P-Lo, and Iamsu! are key members of the San Francisco Bay Area artist group Heartbreak Gang (HBK), a hip-hop group revitalizing the Bay Area sound of the hip hop community since Mac Dre, Too $hort, and E-40 lead the movement. Known well across the Bay Area, each of these artists have worked with known singers and rappers including Wiz Khalifa, 2 Chainz, French Montana and Yo Gotti. “Every Night” is popular song off of P-Lo and Kool John’s newest album “Moovie!” that features the old hyphy Bay Area sound with some added bells and whistles. You’re guaranteed to dance to this song, whether you’re from the Bay Area or Canada.

8. "With Me" – dvsn

FOR FANS OF: BJ The Chicago Kid, Majid Jordan, The Weeknd, Kehlani, Marc E. Bassy

Dvsn is an alternative R&B duo consisting of producer Paul Jefferies (aka Nineteen85) and vocalist Daniel Daley that has peaked this past April after their album “Sept 5th” was released by Drake’s OVO Sound. With a similar sound to The Weeknd, PARTYNEXTDOOR, and Majid Jordan, dvsn has slow jams featuring soulful (and at times, very sexual) lyrics layed over smooth melodies and highlited with the occasional falsetto.

9. "Show Me Love" (feat. Chance the Rapper, Moses Sumney and Robin Hannibal) [Skrillex Remix] – Hundred Waters

FOR FANS OF: Flume, DJ Khaled, Vic Mensa, D.R.A.M., Drake, Wiz Khalifa

If you liked Chance the Rapper’s newest album, “The Coloring Book,” you’ll love this remix he did with Skrillex, Moses Sumney and Robin Hannibal. The once slow song now features catchy beats and a bit of reggae inspiration. Although the style is very different from Skrillex’s regular music (which is a lot harder with sharper beats and cuts in the music), it’s a great song for reading a book, driving during a road trip or really any occasion.

10. "Thief" – Ookay

FOR FANS OF: Marshmello, Slushii, Major Lazer, NGHTMRE

The San Diego producer Ookay (pronounce ew-kay) has recently exploded onto the electronic dance music scene, partially due to his hilarious personality on Twitter and for being featured in Marshmello’s (another popular electronic dance music producer) DJ sets at various concerts. His most popular song, “Thief,” is a necessary song for your end-of-summer playlist with its upbeat and party vibes.

Here is a Spotify playlist of all the songs mentioned to end your summer on a good note.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

Christmas tree

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
