Makeup brands are constantly releasing collections--there is no time of year during which they all take a break from releases nor is there one specific time when they all release things. Any excuse to bring out a collection will be taken, and any day could be release day.
Now, as a makeup lover, I am not complaining. I love for there to be new products, new ideas, and new colors brought into the world of beauty, and having a million options when I go to buy a new lipstick, foundation, etc. is nice for someone who has a lot of makeup already.
But, lately, almost all of the products being released... are kind of boring, especially when it comes to eyeshadow palette releases.
No one needs four variations of beige in one palette, nor do I need a variation of beige in every single eyeshadow palette I own, because if I do need one, I can grab one of the other dozen beige eyeshadows I own or even use the bronzer I'll be using in a few seconds anyway as a beige eyeshadow. Trust me, we all have enough beige eyeshadow!
Here are 11 eyeshadow palettes that make me want to go back to sleep until something funky comes out, 'cause we could all certainly use something funky in our makeup bags.
1. NARS Atomic Blonde Eye & Face Palette
In my book, gold eyeshadow is almost just as boring as beige eyeshadow. This is not to say that I never use gold or beige eyeshadow, but I do have at least a dozen different varieties of gold/beige shadows in my repertoire of palettes. NARS, you literally made a palette that is FIVE variations of gold and one dark brown.
I just... why?
2. KKW Beauty The Classic Eyeshadow Palette
Kim, sweetie... look how beige this is.
Okay, now, to be fair, Kim's brand is just starting out (sort of) and this is only the second eyeshadow palette she has created, so I will cut her some slack, because, I guess, some people would say all brands need a staple, neutral eyeshadow palette in their permanent line, which is what I presume she was going for in with this palette, which, she aptly named 'The Classic.'
I get it.
And Kim K is known for her beigey, nude, brown clothes and makeup, so I understand that this is pretty on-brand.
But it's still a beige palette and it's boring as heck. Next.
3. Anastasia Beverly Hills Norvina Eyeshadow Palette
This palette grinds my gears, man.
Not only is it beigey, browny and boring, but ABH is trying to pass it off as a purple palette. I don't understand.
Yes, it is in purple packaging and yes, it has THREE purple shades, but it also has an overpowering color scheme of light pink and beige and a few, yes, a FEW purples. That's 25% of this 12-pan palette.
If I was at a restaurant and I ordered a dish that was labeled as a pasta dish, I would anticipate my plate to come out with at least 50% of its contents being pasta, right?
This is not a purple palette! It's bland!
4. Kylie Cosmetics The Summer Palette
I think ABH and Kylie may have had a chat going on that by making the packaging a certain color, it automatically makes your palette not a neutral one.
Kylie's summer 'kyshadow' palette is chock full of beiges and golds (dare I say bronzes) with a sprinkle of coral-ish orange-ish tones. It's warm. It's neutral. It's all any brands seem to know how to make anymore.
5. Morphe Dare to Create
Morphe, all of your palettes are a big ole variation of beige, so I appreciate the amount of an attempt in breaking that norm. I think that, while there are a relatively excessive amount of beiges (the whole middle row), this palette does show some promise at throwing in some real variety.
Until you look a little closer. The dark browns and blues in both the top and bottom rows show a very scary lack of diversity in depth and undertone. I could do with just about one of those deepening shades and one of those (for some reason larger than the rest of the shades) beiges in the middle row. Take away the rest of the beiges and browns, and you're left with 4 blues, 3 greens, and about 4 pink shades in a 39 shade palette, and those shades aren't even that crazy enticing.
I don't understand why someone would buy this palette if they're looking for "something different" when the eyeshadows that make the palette "something different" make up a scarily low portion of the entire palette.
39 shades is a lot of shades, surely there could have been some room for more color and diversity beyond shimmery blues. What about some matte blues? Matte green? Yellows? Purples? Is anyone actually going to break out of the beige transition shade trend and start giving a girl some options?
6. Milani Pure Passion & Soft and Sultry
So much beige, so much gold, so much brown, so much neutral. At this point, surely everyone has had a brand they like come out with a boring neutral eyeshadow palette that they like. Why do brands keep trying to one-up each other... with other boring palettes?
I don't get it!
I'll throw in a little of a devil's advocate note, though, and applaud Milani as a drugstore brand for coming out with one of these neutral palettes that I've heard good things about in terms of formula. They're giving makeup shoppers an affordable option to buying decent eyeshadows without having to buy online. So, good on you, Milani, for making good quality, boring eyeshadow affordable.
7. Lorac Pro 4
Take a look at the top row of this palette. Take a look at the first six shades of this row (which has eight shades, mind you). Tell me those all aren't the same color.
That's a little (emphasis on the little) dramatic, yes, but those six colors are very similar.
Now take a look at the first four shades of the bottom row. Tell me those aren't all the same color.
Like I said about the Morphe palette, I'm not out here to buy a palette where most of the shades are pretty much the same color. It kind of seems like a waste of money. It is a waste of money, especially when most people buying a $44 eyeshadow palette like this one already own at least one or two other eyeshadow palettes that, I'm willing to bet good money, they already own that have these exact same colors.
Some of these brands are robbing their customers but people are fine with it, for some reason I can't understand.
8. Melt Cosmetics 27 Palette
Warm neutrals. Again.
And they're still boring me.
And they're still going to charge customers $58 for a browny orange palette, which, again, they probably have the exact same shades in other eyeshadow palettes they already own.
9. Colourpop Sol & Mar Palettes
Yet again, a mountain of beige and gold.
Beyond that, the palette on the left, the more orange one, is called 'Sol,' which is 'sun' in Spanish. How can they have a palette named after the sun and not have a single yellow in the palette? And how can the palette named after the sea ('Mar') only have three blues!?
Yes, there's sand at the bottom of the ocean, and that's brown, but nobody hears the word ocean and goes "oh, but... sand." I would certainly expect more than three blues in an ocean inspired eyeshadow palette and at least one yellow in a sun inspired eyeshadow palette.
I get that these palettes are only $12 a piece, so it's not like you'd be wasting as much money on boring, repeated eyeshadows as you would if you bought some of these other palettes, but that doesn't change the fact that I don't want or need them.
10. Milani Cosmetics Gilded Desires Eyeshadow Palette
Again, Milani!? Really!? Another neutral eyeshadow palette in the same summer?
I don't even know what to say anymore!
11. Morphe x Jaclyn Hill Eyeshadow Vault
This is another Morphe release, however, since it's in collaboration with an influencer, the brand itself has less say in the creation of the palette.
With that said, I would like to applaud Jaclyn for limiting herself to only TWO BEIGES (!!!!) in her entire vault of 40 eyeshadows. Like, really, I know that must have been a challenge, because we all really love beige.
But, despite the well-appreciated lack of beige, there is a lot of monotony here, and it's all pretty warm and neutral. There are a lot of colors that look way too much like each other, within palettes and between the lot as a whole.
Like I've said in regards to Milani and Colourpop, though, I appreciate the affordability of these (boring) palettes, because it gives people who don't have a lot of money to spend on makeup a quality option (or four) for eyeshadow. These are only $15 a piece or $49 for the whole thing, which would be a lot of eyeshadow for the price, especially comparing it to some of the other palettes on this list.
