Summers are a great time to try new things, meet new people, and have fun. If you're craving all this, and want to make some money while doing it, considering taking a summer job some place new.
Winter of 2015, I decided I didn't want to spend another summer at home, I wanted to be somewhere new. So, what better way than to fly myself out to the other side of the country and spend the summer working and living there? Yellowstone National Park. That was my home for the summer.
While being immersed in nature and having the time of your life can sound like a blast, being somewhere completely foreign to you and not knowing anybody is hard. Being somewhere in a different time zone than where you call home is hard. Being somewhere where there is literally no cell signal and very, very crappy wifi, is hard. But you're better for it. I made friends that I'll probably have for the rest of my life. We're scattered out across the country but still keep in touch, planning our future visits. The lack of cell service centers you. You learn that technology and social media are not everything. Living in the middle of nature is good for the soul. We often forget how beautiful this planet we live on is, and how connected we are with it. Spending three months, living out of a tiny room divided by paper thin walls with people from different countries, backgrounds, and languages, is so humbling.
If you are craving adventure, spending a summer away is a great way to get your fill. Yellowstone National Park, and so many other places are always looking for summer employees. Take that leap and start a new chapter in your life.
