This summer I am working at a summer day camp. From 8:30 am to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday I am with children. In order to survive the six weeks of madness, I keep these 4 things on hand.
1. Water
My job at camp requires me to be moving for 90% of the day. Because of this it is extremely important that I stay hydrated and remind my campers to do so as well. I try to drink one bottle of water per hour. While that might seem excessive to some (and cause me to use the bathroom very often) it keeps me moving and prevents me from getting a headache!
2. Counselor Friends
For the most part, I enjoy spending time with kids. However, there are times when they start to drive me up a wall. When they ask the same question, 17 times. When they decide to make a mess and blame it on someone else. When they disappear without telling an adult. In all of these moments, I am extremely grateful for my work friends.
3. A sweatshirt
All of my activities during the day happen to be indoors. The building they happen in blasts air conditioning so aggressively you would think they were converting it into a large refrigerator. I always have to have a sweatshirt around for when I get too cold. Also if I need to take a nap during my break it doubles as an excellent pillow.
4. Snacks...Lots of Snacks
The camp day is very long and can make you extremely hungry. I know that by the time lunch comes around I am starving. Chasing after 7-year-old kids all day can be draining, especially if you are participating in physical activities. In order to have enough energy to keep up with your campers make sure you have enough snacks.
Even though camp is a great way to spend your summer, there can be many trying moments. In order to get the most out of your time and have the most enjoyable experience to make sure you are prepared.
