Summer Is Better Than Winter

The cold always bothered me anyway.

Summer Is Better Than Winter

Bear with me here. I appreciate “No Shave November” as much as the next woman, and I will sport comfortable black leggings at least four times a week. Yet, my humble opinion stands – summer trumps winter! Yes, cooler temperatures are sometimes a welcomed change after months of sweltering heat, but I still prefer the latter over the former. Here are 3 reasons why:

1. It is easier to dress for summer.

Nothing is more annoying than the mood swings of Louisiana’s winter. Seriously, how am I supposed to dress for a low of 45 and a high of 98? Too many times I’ve trekked across campus in a sweatshirt and knee-high boots to my early morning class, only to be forced to change into a short-sleeved shirt and flip-flops by noon. It is like Mother Nature can never make up her mind.

At least in the summertime, I know what the forecast will read: hot all day! Therefore, I can rock a tank top and a pair of shorts without worrying about freezing to death because the temperature will not drastically change. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same for winter.

2. Dressing in layers is a hassle.

Ugh. When I was in grade school, my mom made me wear this huge bubble coat that made me look like Michelin Man from the tire commercial. It seemed as I was doing the “100 Layers of Clothes” challengefor how many garments I had piled on my small frame. Once I arrived inside, I had to strip off half my wardrobe and carry the excess clothes around with me since it was so warm in the building. It was a struggle.

On the other hand, when sunshine was prevalent, I never needed to stuff a heavy overcoat and scarf into my locker to avoid lugging it around with me. Being hot is not my favorite thing in the world, but I would rather be just hot than put on stacks of clothes to protect myself from the cold only to end up hot in the long run. It is not fun.

3. Waking up cold sucks.

If I am buried underneath a mountain of thick blankets, the last thing I want to do is leave that toasty sanctuary in order to get dressed for the day. During the summer, my teeth do not chatter and my shoulders do not tremble as I rush to change out my pajamas. I also do not have to worry about catching the flu if I walk barefoot on the floor.

Needless to say, I find waking up with perspiration trickling down the side of my face more preferable than waking up shuddering for dear life. That is my two cents, though.

Yes, I enjoy celebrating Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s, and no, I do not like being swarmed by love bugs and dragonflies every time I walk outside during the summer. However, I will take scorching heat over chilly winds any day of the week. The unpredictability, the art of dressing in layers and the misfortune of waking up cold are not features I look forward to every year when the temperatures drop. Call me crazy, but I'm already anticipating summer. Bring on the heat!

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
