Summer Adventures In Oregon

A list of things to do in Oregon over the summer.

Summer Adventures In Oregon

As summer vacation is quickly approaching, many are finding jobs and planning trips. It is important to have a balance between gaining experience and relaxing over break. Luckily, there are numerous places around Oregon that can either be a day trip, or a weekend getaway. Here are just a few of my favorites:

1. The Columbia River Gorge

This is a great place for any outdoor adventure. Along the river there are a number of trailheads and you can pick a more gentle or strenuous hike depending on your needs. Trailheads generally start to appear along the drive about 45 minutes away from Portland. There are also several places to camp if you want to extend your visit. Some especially popular hikes are Angel’s Rest, Punchbowl Falls, Horsetail Falls, Oneonta Falls, and of course Multnomah Falls.

2. The Oregon Coast

The Oregon Coast is also whatever you make of it. It makes for a wonderful day trip or a longer stay. Besides relaxing or playing sports on the beach there are a variety of activities to do. There are a number of hikes that provide gorgeous views. Some of my favorite places to explore are Neahkahnie Mountain, Ecola State Park, and Oswald West State Park. There are also many towns and shops to explore and of course, lots of fish n’ chips to eat.

3. Mt. Hood

Or any mountain nearby, for that matter. Mt. Hood allows for casual strolls through the woods, swimming, paddle boarding, or canoeing in lakes, or more strenuous hikes around the mountain. Often, certain chairlifts stay open for most of the summer at Timberline if you’re in the mood to ski!

4. The Painted Hills

They’re a bit further away, but definitely worth it. Their natural beauty is a sight you don’t want to miss out on. Though there is not camping directly at the Painted Hills there are a number of nearby campgrounds to explore. There are many trails to explore, again depending on your ability. It is said that the best time of day to photography is late afternoon, so plan your trip accordingly.

5. Crater Lake

Again, this is a further drive from Portland, but incredibly worthwhile. Like most other places, Crater Lake can be a strenuous backpacking trip, or a more gentle and relaxing vacation. You can combine both trips and hike for a few days and then stay at the lodge for a relaxing end to your adventure. Either way, it is one of the most gorgeous places in Oregon. You can hike down the crater and even go for a swim—if you’re willing to brave to the cold water!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
