Ah, summertime. The sun, the surf, the movies! Summer 2016 has given us a slew of movies to view, some better than others. While I can't list every single movie that was released in the past couple of months, here are the biggest news-worthy movies of Summer 2016:
WINNERS
1. "Captain America: Civil War"
Budget: $250 million
Box Office: $1.152 billion
Combining more characters than your typical Avengers movies, Marvel fans were thrilled when the latest Spider-Man was introduced, along with teasing "Spider-Man: Homecoming" during its mid-credits scene at the end.
2. "Finding Dory"
Budget: $200 million
Box Office: $915.9 million
With Ellen DeGeneres headlining this long-awaited sequel that had kids & teenagers alike (myself, too!) waiting for this sequel since 2003's "Finding Nemo," it had the right combination of elements to skyrocket this sequel to success.
3. "Suicide Squad"
Budget: $175 million
Box Office: $575.4 million (and growing)
Earlier this summer, DC fans began a petition to shut down the movie review website Rotten Tomatoes after they gave "Suicide Squad" a low score of 26 percent. Despite this, it didn't stop fans from checking out this antagonist flick, and gave their own reviews, the majority of which praised the movie.
LOSERS
1. "Ghostbusters"
Budget: $144 million
Box Office: $208.1 million
Problems plagued this remake before it even was released, with issues of its all-female cast (girl power!), which affected its box office results. Although its budget was $144 million, a large amount of money was spent on the films marketing. Due to this, the film has yet to break even (as of when this article was published).
2. "Popstar: Never Stop Stopping"
Budget: $20 million
Box Office: $9.5 million
While The Lonely Island brought us hilarious hits such as "Lazy Sunday" & "I'm on a Boat", this music documentary parody couldn't relive its magical heyday from years ago despite its large quantity of celebrity cameos, making it feel like an 'SNL Digital Bore' instead of an 'SNL Digital Short'.
3. "X-Men: Apocalypse"
Budget: $178 million
Box Office: $542.7 million
Despite tripling its budget, the ninth installment of the X-Men series couldn't hold a candle to Marvel's other releases for 2016. It's slow moving story line spent more time showing its viewers why Magneto was the bad guy (yet again), along with more scenes than we could handle of Apocalypse rounding out his squad of henchmen, and then just fast-forwarded to its final (and disappointing) fight.
What other movies do you guys think did well or did poorly in the box office this summer? I'd love to hear your opinions, so comment below and let me know what you think!
