About Me: Summary of A Small Human

Hello person reading this article,

My name is Makaela Moser, I am a sophomore at Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota. I'm majoring in Communications and minoring in English (and possibly Political Science soon). I am on the Speech and Debate team, which has helped me come out of my shy little shell and make new friends and gain new experiences.

I am 19 years old and the oldest sibling in my family. But unfortunately, I have a baby face which makes me look like I'm 12 years old. Being shorter than the average human also doesn't help my cause. I stand at a tall 5 feet 1 inch. So naturally I get mistaken for a small child quite often, or my friends bring up this fact just as often. Unfortunately, I have become accustomed to this lifestyle. The struggle is real.

My favorite animals are cats and red pandas. I believe that they are the best and most adorable animals ever. Many people don't like cats, but I absolutely enjoy their existence. I love cats to the point that people probably think I'm crazy. Being a crazy cat lady doesn't sound that bad to be completely honest. Surrounded by furry little demons sounds like the life I want to live!

While cats are my life, Netflix will always have a spot in my heart as well. My favorite shows on Netflix are; The Walking Dead, American Horror Story, Bates Motel, The 100, Bobs Burgers, Parks and Rec, Sherlock, Stranger Things, Freaks and Geeks, Always Sunny in Philadelphia and The Shannara Chronicles. Just to name a few. Recently, however, I have been getting into watching stand up comedies and have been watching 1-2 star rated horror films because I need a good laugh every occasionally!

Reading is something that I have always loved to do and I've found my fair share of amazing books! My favorites include; The Harry Potter Series, The Maze Runner series, The Hunger Games series, the 5th Wave series, Perks of Being a Wallflower, Me Earl and the Dying Girl, Dark Places, The Great Gatsby, and many more that I can't think of now.

So basically, my entertainment mostly consists of post-apocalyptic, dystopian worlds and things of that nature. Music-wise, I kind of just like every genre except for country music (sorry country fans, no hate though).

Fall is the best season in my opinion! All the beautiful colors give you many photo opportunities! The cool air gives you the chance to finally wear layers and beanies! I have a slight obsession with flannels and beanies so fall is my time to shine! Also, coffee and hot chocolate are the best things to drink this time of year! Pumpkin flavored everything is always a big deal in the fall and I love it. I am fully aware that this paragraph makes me sound "basic" but I don't care. Halloween is in the fall and that's my favorite holiday next to Christmas and you can't go wrong with that.

The last of my favorites on this article, but certainly not the least, are my friends and family. New and/or old, my friends and family help guide me through life in the most interesting ways. They are always there to support me no matter what decisions I make and I always try my hardest to support them back! Coming to college I've learned to come out of my shell and make friends with complete strangers. Those strangers have turned into some of the best friends I could ever ask for! I can't forget my friends from high school who constantly keep in touch! I miss them constantly. My family is my rock, especially my mom, even though we don't keep in touch as often as we should with our busy lives, nothing could ever break us apart. I'm glad to have such amazing people in my life and I don't know where I'd be without them!

Wow, that got sappy and emotional. But that's me I guess. I'm not sure what else to write. Hopefully, that wasn't too awful to read, I'm sorry if it was. I'm excited to be a writer for The Odyssey and to be a part of this community! I love to write and I feel as though this is going to help me out in the long run and be something fun to do! Again, I'm so happy and excited to be a part of this community and I'm so thankful to have this opportunity to be able to write for this platform!

Alright, that's all I have or else I will keep going on and on and no one wants that. So, yeah, thanks for reading my very first article!

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.

Blair Waldorf
Stop Hollywood

For those of you who have watched "Gossip Girl" before (and maybe more than just once), you know how important of a character Blair Waldorf is. Without Blair, the show doesn’t have any substance, scheme, or drama. Although the beginning of the show started off with Blair’s best friend Serena returning from boarding school, there just simply is no plot without Blair. With that being said, Blair’s presence in the show in much more complex than that. Her independent and go-getter ways have set an example for "Gossip Girl" fans since the show started and has not ended even years after the show ended. Blair never needed another person to define who she was and she certainly didn’t need a man to do that for her. When she envisioned a goal, she sought after it, and took it. This is why Blair’s demeanor encompasses strong women like her.

singing
Cambio

Singing is something I do all day, every day. It doesn't matter where I am or who's around. If I feel like singing, I'm going to. It's probably annoying sometimes, but I don't care -- I love to sing! If I'm not singing, I'm probably humming, sometimes without even realizing it. So as someone who loves to sing, these are some of the feelings and thoughts I have probably almost every day.
