After 2 weeks of being back to the grind at college, I was ready to reward myself for having been on time for each 8am class I have had so far, and a Friday night trip to the movies was just what I deserved. The movie “Sully” premiered September 9 in our local theatre, and although I had seen the trailer, I was greatly surprised at how well done the story was. Clint Eastwood directed the movie, and Tom Hanks played Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, the Captain of US Airways Flight 1549 who safely landed a failing aircraft in the Hudson River. All 155 people on board that flight survived. Five reasons I would highly recommend this film are:
1. It’s action packed.
The audience not only hears details of the events that led up to the landing, we also get to share some of the experiences because of the view from which things were filmed. There is the perfect amount of visual stimulation throughout the movie, and it allows you to engage emotions as if you had been close by.
2. There are surprises.
The movie reports the details of an interesting twist that occurred soon after Sully was declared a hero by the media.
3. It’s educational.
Every movie based on true facts usually has some Hollywood rights of embellishment of details, but this movie was very well done. The audience can learn about what happened leading up to the landing, the human side of how decisions like that are made, and the aftermath that has to be sifted through.
4.There is a hero.
Captain Sully landed an aircraft in New York’s Hudson River on January 15, 2009, and all 155 people on board lived. That’s a hero.
5. There is a happy ending.
With all the stressful things that occur day to day, everyone can benefit from seeing a happy ending occur.
If you choose to see one movie next weekend, make it this one. Clint Eastwood and Tom Hanks will entertain and educate you.
