In the past few years it seems like DC and Marvel have been producing more and more fantastic movies about superheroes who team up and save the day, but what about super-villains? What would happen if the worst of the worst villains were forced to team up to essentially save the day? The new DC movie, "Suicide Squad," is about just that, but is it what everyone was expecting or hoping for?
Ever since I saw the trailer for the movie, I couldn't wait to see it! I was super excited to see a movie with Harley Quinn and the Joker, and to see how the movie would play out. So, a few nights ago I went to see "Suicide Squad" with my boyfriend who is a huge fan of DC and even has a DC encyclopedia. The theater itself was filled with people of all ages waiting to see this movie. When the lights dimmed, I think everyone was expecting something a little bit different than what was presented. Without giving too much away, I think people were expecting to see more of the Joker and if I'm being honest, I think people were all hoping for a Joker performance like that of Heath Ledger's. While Jared Leto gave a great performance, he was definitely not everyone's cup of tea.
The movie itself revealed deepest desires and weaknesses of the members of the Suicide Squad and how they got to where they are. So, what is the Suicide Squad actually? It is a group of villains who can be sent on the most dangerous of missions that are "hired" by the government without any sense of consequence. These criminals are not really even hired -- they're more or less forced to go on these missions and if they even think about running away, they are literally one push of a button away from death. If any of them want a shorter life sentence, they must be compliant. It makes you wonder if these bad guys could ever be good guys or if there really is no chance of redemption for any of them.
Overall, I really enjoyed the movie. I thought the whole cast did a superb job at embodying their characters, the music was great, and the effects were awesome. If you really want to know how the movie is, I suggest going and seeing it for yourself. Did it meet all of your expectations? Did it surprise you? Was it what you expected?
