Warning: plot spoilers ahead.
On August 5, 2016, the third film in DC comic's extended movie universe was released in theaters across the world. "Suicide Squad" follows Amanda Waller and her efforts to create a black ops group that comprises some of the worst villains of the DC universe. "Suicide Squad" is a big shift from the common place superhero movie where we are shown a group of bad guys fighting to help people instead of hurting them. It is a very interesting concept and, as I sat in the theater last night watching the movie I was able to see "Suicide Squad" for what it truly was.
Now "Suicide Squad" takes place after the events of "Batman V. Superman" with the world fully knowing about meta-humans populating the earth and their immense powers. The movie begins with a tour of where some of our favorite villains are being kept prisoner and some flashbacks showing how they got there. This was one of my favorite parts of the movie because it added some needed backstory for our characters and gave us the fans some epic cameos of a couple of our favorite DC superheroes capturing the villains of the "Suicide Squad" story.
This tour coincides with our favorite government official, Amanda Waller, who is convincing some high ranking military officials of the importance of her Task Force X. She explains how the next "Superman" might not share their same values, as Superman did, and may be a threat to the United States. She argues who would then be able to stop this meta-human terrorist, and her answer is a group of meta-humans who wont be afraid to do the dirty work.
The rest of the movie then follows the plot line of a betrayal by one of the "Suicide Squad" members who begins a plan to wipe out all of human kind and replace them with those who will serve her. Our "Suicide Squad" members are then tasked with the suicide mission of stopping this powerful entity or get their heads blown off. There is also a side plot with our newest movie Joker and his mission to rescue his love, Harley Quinn, from Amanda Waller's grasps.
Positives
Now I give "Suicide Squad" a solid 8/10 as it was a very fun and exciting film that was made for us DC fans, but had some major character balancing flaws with how much focus each member of the Suicide Squad got.
The things I loved about the film was Will Smith as Deadshot, and Margot Robbie and Jared Leto's amazing chemistry on screen as Harley Quinn and the Joker.
Will Smith delivered an amazing performance as the deadly assassin, Deadshot. He brought his comedic and emotional tapping abilities as a actor to make Deadshot, a actually likable character, with respect to how likable a man who willingly kills people for money can be. Will Smith threw some of his Pursuit of Happiness and Fresh prince of Bel Air traits into a gun-toting hit man fighting in the DC universe.
Margot Robbie is the Harley Quinn we have been waiting for on the big screen ever since the character debuted on the Batman animated series back in 1992. She nails the Quinn accent to a T and shows off how badass Harley Quinn truly is with the amount of ass kicking she does in the movie. Margot delivers plenty of laughs as well as she shows how insane Harley really is. I will be very upset if we do not get to see her in multiple DC movies from here on out.
Now some people were turned off when Jared Leto's Joker was first shown with all of his tattoos and his metal plated teeth, as he seemed to be more of a gang banger than the clown prince of crime, but after seeing him in action, I say that Leto's version is a awesome take on the Joker villain. This Joker in my eyes is the true prince of crime for Gotham City. He has a legit crew of criminals that follow his every order and he has that mafia swagger to him as he goes about his destructive business. I see this Joker as the young and even more wild version than say the more experienced Heath Ledger version in the Dark Knight trilogy. He is just looking to cause some major mayhem with his main squeeze Harley Quinn.
"Suicide Squad" has me more excited than ever for the solo Batman film that Ben Affleck is directing and starring in. This is because of the exceptional performances of Deadshot, Harley Quinn, and the Joker show me that there is so much that Ben could work into his Batman film to make it one that could rival Christopher Nolan's masterpiece that is "The Dark Knight Rises." A Ben Affleck Batman film that incorporates Will Smith's Deadshot character trying to get revenge on Batman for locking him up and then at the same time seeing Batman doing battle with Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn and Jared leto's Joker would make me as giddy as the nerdy fanboy I am.
Negatives
Now the major problem with "Suicide squad" that I had was that it did not give justice to all of the members of the Suicide squad. It mainly focused on Deadshot and Harley Quinn, giving them the longest and most flashbacks when the other members of the squad were lucky to get a single flashback.
I understand what the film makers were thinking as they wanted to devote as much time as possible to their big guns and Deadshot and Harley Quinn were the big guns of Suicide Squad. You have a super popular and talented actor, Will Smith, playing Deadshot so you do not want to underuse him and then you have half of the mega couple with Harley Quinn, so focusing on her and her relationship with The Joker makes sense especially if you are trying to help set up the future Batman films with those two as the villains.
It is just a tad sad when you have a bunch of awesome villains that you could have done some cool stuff with like Killer Croc and Captain Boomerang, but you just let them fill the roles of backups.
My final negative is the villain of the movie. I do not want to totally spoil who is the villain is for those who have not seen the movie yet, but it follows a very generic one where they think all of humanity needs to be destroyed and whatnot. The villain could have easily been an awesome member of the Suicide squad and helped them fight a more original villain.
Overall
Overall, "Suicide Squad" was a very enjoyable movie that brought our favorite DC villains to the big screen for the DC extended movie universe that they are building. Now the critics, especially Rotten Tomatos, are bashing "Suicide Squad" as they did with "Batman V. Superman" and my thoughts are that the bashing is not needed as the movie is nowhere as bad as Rotten Tomatos is saying it is. My advice is that you should not let other people decide for you if a movie is good or not. The best way to find out if "Suicide Squad" is a good or bad movie is to go and see it for yourself and base your decision off your own experience.
