While there have been a flood of summer flicks this season, the last one came out this past Friday — "Suicide Squad." This movie is actually based off the DC comics antihero team. The film was written and directed by David Ayer. It has an all-star ensemble of actors and actresses such as Australian actress Margot Robbie, Will Smith, son of Clint Eastwood Scott Eastwood, British model Cara Delevingne and "How to Get Away with Murder's" Viola Davis.
This movie takes place right after the death of Superman in the superhero film "Batman vs. Superman." With Superman now being away, trouble is still lurking the world. The problem is there's no one to protect the city. Viola Davis, who plays Amanda Waller, comes up with the concept of recruiting imprisoned villains to protect the city. As the movie progresses, we see each villain's past and how they became who they are.
Cara Delevingne plays archeologist June Moone, who, while on a journey through the jungle, finds a super being, known as the witch named Enchantress. Enchantress takes over Moone's physical body. Amanda Waller wants to recruit her as the Suicide Squad member's secret weapon, but Enchantress takes over Moone and turns against Waller, leaving the human race in worldwide chaos. The Suicide Squad is then sent out to defeat the witch.
Throughout the film, the character's past lives are revealed and we see how they became the villains they are. Will Smith plays Deadshot, a hitman who can never miss a gunshot. In the film, he's the glue of team. Wherever he goes, the rest follows, making him the natural-born leader. We learn early on that he and his wife are divorced, and, because of his criminal record, he cannot have full custody of his daughter.
Margot Robbie plays Harley Quinn, the partner in crime and girlfriend of the Joker. We get bits and pieces of how she became a villain in the movie, but her character's story is quite spread out through the movie. We get to see more of her and the Joker's budding romance to now. Harley Quinn is used as somewhat a comic relief for the film.
Jay Hernandez plays El Diablo, an ex-gangster who, at the moment, refuses to fight with his given power any longer. We don't get to his personal story until nearing the end of the film.
Though I feel as though some of the other characters didn't get as much time into their past stories as we see in these three characters. In my opinion, the movie would score a seven out of 10. It's likable and action packed with a great cast. Although, some things could have been better, such as the delivery of the plot. But other than that, it's a perfectly good superhero movie. It's interesting to watch how they became villains and learn more about the characters as the film goes on. It's a must see for superhero movie lovers.
