Succeeding Is A State Of Mind

There are only two steps to success.

I remember the height being too much for me to handle, up in the humid air as the helmet itched at my head and the harness dug into my skin. I remember the stench of wilderness and wildlife in the air, as I strapped into the cables that I had ensured with my life. I took one look down off the pieces of wood and decided I could not make the jump to the logs dangling in thin air, I wasn't just afraid, I was paralyzed by fear. I vaguely remember not being very afraid of falling, I was more afraid of looking like an idiot in front of everyone who made the jump and succeeded. One by one I let the others pass me, those courageous enough to take the risk. Eventually, my sister snuck up on me from behind and pushed me. Granted I hated my sister in that moment, let my lesson be learned; sometimes we all just need a push.

I believe there are only two steps to achieving success: deciding what you want and going for it. We as humans are more often than not, so consumed by the overwhelming fear of failure in our everyday lives that we neglect to strive for anything. So many of us teeter on the edge of wanting to jump head first into the fearful abyss that is the unknown of life but, our fear of failing causes us to give up altogether. The journey is almost always worth the risk, so don't be afraid to take it. As humans, we need to push past these fears and take the gamble because without chances we would never get anywhere in life.

Deciding what you want.

Deciding what we want can be the scariest part of the process, because what we want may be unrealistic to what society believes to be achievable. Opening your own business may be the hardest thing you've ever done, but if it's what you want then go for it. There is no reason you can't go to school when you're 60 years, purely to gain knowledge, if that's what you want . If your goal is to be happy then you need to find what will make you happy. You are the only person who will ever regret not going for your dreams, so don't let anyone talk you out of something that won't affect them.

Doing what you need to get there.

Now that you've gotten through the hard part, you need to do whatever you can to achieve whatever it is that you want so badly. If you want to learn, sign up for your classes. If you want to travel, start looking for cheap hotels online. If you want to get rid of your anxiety, start meditating. The only person who is responsible for your future is you. Succeeding is a state of mind and you will only get there if you tell yourself you will.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
